Virtual private network
VPN · A technology that provides secure remote access by building an encrypted tunnel over the internet to a company network or another network.
- 01
Why it matters
A VPN lets remote teams reach internal systems without exposing them to the internet. VPN appliances, however, are frequent targets for attackers: an unpatched device or an account without multi-factor authentication can open the door to the whole network. It also matters not to give everyone who connects access to the entire network.
- 02
Example
A company's accounting server is reachable only over the VPN; VPN sign-in requires multi-factor authentication, and staff outside accounting cannot see that server even when connected.
- 03
Common mistake
Delaying updates on the VPN appliance. Flaws in these devices can start being exploited on the day they are announced; updating them is a priority.
