Purple teaming

A form of exercise in which the attacking (red) and defending (blue) teams work at the same table, trying attack techniques step by step and improving detection together.

  1. 01

    Why it matters

In covert exercises results arrive as a report weeks later; in purple teaming, the moment each technique is tried the question is “did we see it, and if not, why?” The missing detection rule is written immediately and tested again. That is why it strengthens defence measurably in a short time.

  2. 02

    Example

In a one-day session the red team tries ten attack techniques. The blue team sees six; rules are written the same day for the four that were missed, and all of them are detected on the second attempt.

  3. 03

    Common mistake

Not maintaining the rules written after the session. Rules can break as the environment changes; the exercise should be repeated at intervals.
