Keep seeing AEO/GEO abbreviations for AI search — what do they mean, are they necessary?

I run an online vocational training course platform targeting the US market. We've been working with a digital marketing agency for about two years and pay them $2,000 a month for traditional organic search optimization. We get decent traffic and sign-ups coming through organic channels.

For the past two months, the agency has been pitching us a new offer. They claim search engines are moving to AI overviews, classic optimization isn't enough anymore, and we need to add AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) to our contract for an extra $1,500 a month. They say if we don't do this, we won't get cited in AI-driven answers and will lose our traffic.

Honestly, these abbreviations feel like just another industry marketing gimmick to me. Technically speaking, do these concepts actually involve anything different from standard semantic optimization, or is it just the same work dressed up? For a small-to-midsize budget, is this extra expense really necessary right now?

Short answer: the terms AEO and GEO represent efforts to adapt to a new search landscape where users read AI-generated direct answers instead of clicking blue links. But these aren't magical technologies invented from scratch; they're simply an extension of well-built semantic search optimization structured data markup, and solid content architecture. You don't need to pay an extra $1,500 a month.

To understand the logic behind these concepts, you only need to know two things: 1) AEO aims to present content in a Q&A format with clear, direct definitions, so search engines can pluck the answer from your site and feature it in the top box when a question is asked. 2) GEO aims to get generative language models to view your site as a trusted authority or citation source when synthesizing a topic, which comes down to original data statistical comparisons, and industry recognition.

Here's what your current agency should already be doing anyway: adding complete schema markup to your pages, stripping fluff from content so it directly addresses user intent, and building digital mentions to boost brand visibility. These are already standard parts of quality technical and content optimization. Your best move is to insist your agency cover these items under your existing $2,000 contract and reject this repackaged add-on.

The digital marketing world loves taking existing tactics every five years, slapping a new three-letter acronym on them, and selling them back to you. Yesterday it was voice search optimization, today it's GEO. The core rule hasn't changed: pages that satisfy search intent, are technically crawlable without errors, and get cited by authoritative sources will always come out on top.

AI models need three technical things to cite a page: complete schema markup, clear entity definition, and semantic clarity in the copy. Models parse clearly structured paragraphs far more easily than convoluted sentences. This is routine technical optimization work, it doesn't require a whole separate specialty.

Over the past six months, without paying any agency extra money, we marked up the Q&A sections of all our course pages with structured data. As a result, our citation rate in generative AI overviews jumped significantly. Cost us zero dollars, just 15 hours of internal content editing.

Ask your agency this: what metric and what tool will you use to report GEO success? Generative search engines produce different overviews for the exact same user asking the exact same question at different times. Tying up $1,500 a month in a service that can't be measured and has no established rank-tracking setup is just throwing money away.

Three things you can do right away: 1) Add FAQs with clear, direct answers to the bottom of your course pages. 2) Tag those FAQs with proper schema markup. 3) Tell your agency to make the content more concise and information-dense within your current budget. Don't open up extra spend.

Next year when it's time to renew your contract, they'll probably slap some new buzzword on the table like LMO (Language Model Optimization) or QAO. Marketers crank out acronyms faster than AI processors compute seriously don't fall for it.

I recommend reviewing the technical scope clauses in your current service agreement carefully. If technical auditing and content optimization are already committed deliverables, adapting to AI search engines isn't a new service; it's an obligation to align existing performance with current search engine algorithms.

edit: fixed a few typos.

Bottom line, the consensus here is clear: AEO and GEO reflect real search trends, but they aren't standalone line items. Decline the agency's upsell and have them fold those same requirements into the technical and content scope of your existing contract.

There are three things to check when doing this. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first. Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Great work. honestly the answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Everyone rushing into artificial intelligence search optimization gets stuck at the same point. That's all sorry if I went on too long.

Generally correct, but one part is missing. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast making it faster changes nothing.

There are three things to check when doing this. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth. Proven by experience.

I'm writing this so you don't make the same mistake. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Good luck with that.

There is something to watch out for. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Here's how it went for us. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

A quick correction: "secure" here isn't absolute; it just means raising the cost. The goal isn't to make attacks impossible, but to make them not worth the effort.
