Google Ads conversion tracking: numbers in the dashboard don't match the sales report

We sell home decor items on our e-commerce site. Last month we spent a total budget of 3,200 EUR on Google Ads campaigns. btw while optimizing the campaigns I ran into a major discrepancy: the Google Ads dashboard shows 84 conversions coming from those campaigns. However when I look at the order reports in our store's own e-commerce admin panel and our bank transactions, I can only attribute 51 orders to ads.

That's a massive gap of 33 orders. We added the Google Ads tag directly to the website, and we also have an imported conversion goal set up via Google Analytics 4 (GA4).

Which of these two numbers should I believe? Am I double counting while doing Google Ads conversion tracking, or is this huge gap caused by the attribution model and conversion windows? What kind of checklist should I follow to clarify the real data?

Short answer: The main reason for the difference between the two numbers is most likely that both the direct Google Ads tag and the purchase imported from GA4 are marked as primary conversions, or that the conversion reporting dates work on different logic. When making decisions, you should always treat your store's bank-verified order panel as the ultimate source of truth, but make sure you interpret Google Ads' attribution logic correctly when optimizing campaigns.

The first place you need to check is your primary and secondary settings for conversion goals. If both the direct Google Ads tag on the site and the purchase goal coming through GA4 are set to primary, you might be counting a single order as two separate conversions. In that case, you should make the GA4 conversion secondary or keep the direct tag as the sole source.

The second critical issue is reporting dates. Your own store dashboard records the order on the day payment is received. Google Ads, by default, credits the conversion to the day the customer clicked the ad. When you pull an end-of-month report with a 30-day conversion window active, users who clicked at the start of the month but purchased mid-month show up on different dates on each platform, and the totals will never match up one-to-one.

Follow this checklist: 1) Under Tools and Settings > Conversions, verify that only a single purchase action is set to 'Primary'. 2) Make sure the count setting is not set to 'Every' instead of 'One'; for e-commerce, deduplication using a transaction ID on an order basis is essential. 3) Set up an order number filter to prevent the thank-you page from firing duplicate tags when users refresh the page. 4) Monitor the difference between the click date and the conversion date in your reporting window.

If you're not passing a transaction ID to your thank-you page, Google Ads fires a new conversion every time a customer refreshes the page after ordering or clicks the link in their order tracking email. Make sure to check the data payload of the purchase event in the developer console.

We ran into the exact same issue on our furniture site. The ad dashboard showed 120 orders, while the CRM dashboard had 75. Once we added the transaction ID parameter and prevented duplicate fires on the thank-you page, the number in the Ads dashboard matched our CRM data almost perfectly the very next month.

Another reason for the discrepancy is cookie consent. In Europe, Consent Mode kicks in when a user doesn't opt in. Because Google Ads models conversions for users who didn't give consent, the number in the dashboard might attribute sales to ads that actually look organic in your store's order panel.

ga4 and the ads dashboard never match down to the cent anyway, but 84 to 51 is a massive gap then there's definitely double counting going on both the tag and ga4 must be firing at the same time check your goals asap.

Google loves inflating conversions in its own dashboard because it wants you to spend more. With data-driven attribution, it can even give credit to an ad the user saw weeks ago. When making advertising decisions, I always rely on bank statements and order numbers.

For a quick test, add the 'Conversions (by conv. time)' column right next to the 'Conversions' column in the dashboard. That way you can clearly see whether orders are counted on the day of the click or the day of the purchase, which clears up part of the gap right away.

In e-commerce accounting records, only bank receipts and invoiced orders are legally binding. Data in marketing dashboards should merely be considered statistical indicators for budget optimization, never used for financial reporting.

Urgent check: 1) Does the tag fire again when you visit the thank-you page in an incognito tab? 2) Are micro-goals like add-to-cart included in the conversion column? 3) Is the transaction ID being passed as empty?

edit: fixed a few typos.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

How did you solve this? People defend habits not processes. Resistance comes from there.

Good luck with that.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I have no experience with google ads conversion tracking, so I'm asking. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Generally correct but one part is missing. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

Quick summary for newcomers: Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

I'm in the same situation, that's why I'm asking. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
