What is SEO for appearing in AI answers, and should it be handled separately?

We're a 12-person team based in Madrid providing B2B SaaS for local and international markets. We have a monthly organic marketing budget of around 2,800 Euros and have focused heavily on traditional search engine optimization until now. Over the past few months, however, both our clients and our own team members have started turning to AI-powered chatbots and answer engines for search.

We've noticed several competitors frequently cited as sources and recommendations directly within these generated answers. When speaking with agencies, some call this GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), others refer to it directly as AI SEO or LLM optimization, and they're pitching it as a separate billable service.

What is the actual terminology and scope of this new field? Should we treat this as a standalone project or separate consultancy independent of our organic search efforts, or is refining our existing content and technical infrastructure enough?

Short answer: The industry generally refers to this as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) or AI engine optimization. There is no need to set up a separate department or an entirely isolated budget; you can achieve this by reinforcing the information architecture clear definitions, and entity authority of your existing SEO strategy.

When generating responses, AI models don't just rely on keyword matching like traditional search engines. They focus on semantic depth, how clearly and quotably concepts are explained and brand mentions across third-party platforms. While classic SEO aims to win clicks on a SERP, this optimization model aims to be synthesized directly as the source of truth.

Integrating these steps into your current roadmap is sufficient: 1) Write your product or service descriptions using direct, concise, encyclopedic language. 2) Use clear Q&A blocks and schema markup across your page layouts to help bots parse entity relationships. 3) Ensure your brand is contextually referenced in neutral industry guides, trade directories, and niche forums.

Ultimately, be wary of agencies pitching this as a brand-new invention to charge exorbitant fees. Websites with solid technical foundations that produce clear, authoritative content are already naturally crawled and cited by these engines.

Classic agency play: invent a new buzzword, immediately create a new line item on the invoice. Yesterday it was voice search optimization, today it's AI answers. The fundamentals haven't changed: clean HTML, proper structured data, and content that actually helps the reader. Instead of carving out a separate budget, use what you have to make your content more comprehensive.

We had the exact same concern last year for our Madrid-based logistics software. We simply added clear definitions and schemas to our existing content without paying an extra agency retainer. Within four months, our referral traffic from AI engines grew from zero to 180 qualified uniques a month. Conversion rates are notably higher than traditional organic search, too.

Technically speaking, models chunk web pages, store them in vector embeddings, and match them against user prompts. Because of this, vague statements buried deep in massive walls of text get discarded. Placing concise two-sentence summaries directly below your subheadings and keeping your JSON-LD implementations flawless will drastically improve your visibility.

There are very few documented cases yet that can prove how much actual business comes from being cited by these systems. These models are generally designed to resolve the query right on the screen without sending clicks to the site. Paying thousands of Euros for extra consulting just to be cited in an answer that gets zero clicks might not make financial sense at this stage.

Here is a quick step you can take right away: pull up the pages for your top three services. In the first 150 words, state plainly—without any fluff—what the service is, who it is for, and what specific problem it solves. Clear, direct definitions like that are the easiest format for these models to pull from.

we tried this on our own software site, once we turned the blog posts into an faq format a few bots started citing them directly. imo there's no need to hire a separate agency at all your in-house team can easily handle it.

edit: I wrote something wrong above, sorry about that.

On which queries did you notice your competitors being cited? Are they showing up for industry terms, or in direct brand comparisons? If it is the latter, it might just be because they have a stronger presence on third-party review platforms.

Six months ago, a consultant quoted us 1,200 Euro for what they called a GEO package. When I asked for details, I realized all they were really planning to do was fix technical site issues and add data tables to blog posts. We turned it down, tackled it in-house with a colleague in two weeks, and got the same results.

Here's how it went for us. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Let's separate the concepts, they're getting mixed up. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

i agree. just because everyoe does it doesnt mean its right.

when making a decision first look at what data you have on hand. i mean i'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.
