Free technical SEO audit tool flagged 200 warnings — which ones actually matter?

We run a New Jersey-based e-commerce store selling handmade wooden furniture and home decor. The site has around 450 products and roughly 80 blog posts. Last month, trying to figure out why organic traffic stalled, I ran the entire site through a popular free technical SEO audit tool.

Once the scan finished, it spat out 214 errors and warnings. Marked with red and yellow exclamation points, everything from missing image alt tags to H2 hierarchy, canonical variations, render-blocking JS files, and broken links was flagged as urgent. When I sent the report to our web developer, he asked for an extra 1,800 USD to clear the list.

Which of these should I prioritize without blowing our annual marketing budget? On a small catalog site, which warnings are just free tools crying wolf that have virtually zero impact on rankings?

Short answer: Most of the 214 warnings generated by free audit tools are generic template rules that don't directly affect rankings; prioritize only the root issues that physically stop search bots from discovering, crawling, and indexing your pages.

Filter your priorities in three steps: 1) Indexability and crawlability: Erroneous blocks in robots.txt, noindex tags, 404 internal links, and server-side 5xx errors require immediate action. 2) Site structure and page uniqueness: Misconfigured canonicals or duplicate title tags force pages to cannibalize each other—tackle these next. 3) Cosmetic and micro-warnings: Leave missing alt tags, meta description lengths, or H3 ordering for last; none of these will drag a page off page one on their own.

Instead of handing your dev an 1,800 USD blanket task, isolate the top 15-20 crawlability issues and open an hourly ticket. For a 450-product store, fixing critical technical issues usually takes 4-6 hours. You can gradually handle the cosmetic stuff yourself from the admin dashboard.

Ignore third-party tools for a moment and look at the indexing report in Google Search Console. Third-party tools deal in theory; Search Console shows you what bots actually got stuck on. If there are no red errors there, don’t panic.

On a site of similar size (600 products), we spent 1,400 USD fixing all 180 warnings from a similar report. Fixing alt tags and H2s brought zero traffic change; the only real impact came from cleaning up canonical errors and broken links in our XML sitemap.

Don't stress over render-blocking CSS and JS warnings right away. On smaller sites, if your Core Web Vitals are in the green, a few milliseconds won't hurt your rankings. Just watch HTTP status codes and redirect chains; if a redirect takes more than 3 hops, it burns crawl budget.

The entire business model of these free tools relies on scaring users into paid subscriptions or agency services. They flag every missing meta description as critical just to induce panic and sell consulting. At least two-thirds of that report is noise.

u can easily type in image alt tags yourself in the product dashboard in the evenings, no need to pay a dev for that. honestly same for titles and descriptions. the only things that need code are robots and canonicals.

Follow this logic when prioritizing errors: 1) Can the bot reach the page? (robots.txt, HTTP 200). 2) Can the bot understand the page? (canonical, meta noindex). 3) Is the page served to the user in a reasonable time? (mobile-friendly). If the answer is yes to all three, the rest of the list takes a back seat.

Are there warnings in the report about multilingual setups or currency pages? Do you ship outside the US, like to Canada or the UK? If you don't have an international setup, you can straight up ignore the language tag warnings.

In short, don't pay the developer that money. Clean up the indexing issues in Search Console, fix the canonicals and 404 redirects, and fill in the image alt texts yourself from the dashboard; the remaining warnings won't break your business.

Three different views emerged they all complement each other. anyway if you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

If you have questions write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

Hope this helps.

Same here. Mistakes made on the technical SEO audit tool side are usually reversible but expensive.

Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

I'll try it. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Just leaving this note it might be useful.

I'm on watch duty and read the thread. Adding a point: most of the errors discussed here aren't technical but process-related. Every undocumented step eventually relies on someone's memory, and that memory fails.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Generally correct, but one part is missing. When making decisions write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate. anyway this is my opinion I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
