We run a home textiles workshop producing duvet cover sets and bedspreads. I mean we've been selling through our own website for two years and have a decent grasp of traditional Google SEO logic. However, over the past three months, we opened storefronts on major e-commerce marketplaces in Turkey to boost our revenue. We have around 60 different product variants but our sales on these platforms haven't reached the level we expected yet.

In our marketplace listings we kept titles short and clean just like on our own site but we noticed competitors are packing their titles with super long keyword strings... like how exactly do you do marketplace keyword research? What is the logic difference between marketplace search engines and standard web search engines and what data can we track without paid tools?

Short answer: Marketplace keyword research is the process of identifying terms entered into the on-platform search bar by high-intent shoppers and embedding them into your product title variant attributes, and descriptions. While traditional web SEO focuses on informational queries marketplace algorithms only care about commercial searches with the highest purchase intent.

The first place you should look for marketplace analysis is the platform's search bar autocomplete suggestions. For instance when you type 'double duvet cover' suggestions like 'fitted sheet', '100% cotton', and 'ranforce' are real search filters consumers have used most over the last 30 days. Including these terms in the first 60 characters of the title directly boosts your click-through rate.

The second method is analyzing the title and attribute structure of the top 10 bestselling competitor products in your category. List the common fabric types, dimensions colors, and pattern terms that keep showing up in their titles. Marketplace algorithms give you much higher visibility in search matches when you build product titles using the 'Brand + Product Type + Material/Feature + Size/Dimensions + Color' formula.

The biggest difference from traditional web SEO comes down to conversion signals. On Google you can rank purely through content relevance; on marketplaces even if you use the exact right keywords, your ranking drops fast if your product gets no clicks, has a high return rate or isn't priced competitively. Keywords get you listed in search, but price and reviews drive the sale.

Marketplace algorithms scan words based on exact match and root stems. While cramming core attributes up to the 100-character limit seems to work, keyword stuffing gets penalized by the algorithm. Instead of repeating stuff like 'Duvet cover duvet cover set bedspread set', weave specific features throughout.

In our own store, we switched our product titles from 'Brand - Luxury Duvet Cover' to 'Brand Double 100% Cotton Ranforce Duvet Cover Set 200x220'. Without spending a dime on ads, that title optimization alone bumped our weekly organic impressions from 450 to 1,800.

Pay close attention to the filter sidebar on the left side of the marketplace. Half of buyers run a search and then immediately click filters on the left like cotton buttoned, or double. If you leave the technical attribute fields blank when listing an item, your product gets completely filtered out even if you match their search query.

Everyone gets obsessed with keywords, but on a marketplace keywords are just the tip of the iceberg. If your product has zero reviews and your shipping score is terrible the algorithm will never push you to the first two pages no matter how perfect your keywords are. Focus on getting those first 15-20 positive reviews first.

besides search bar suggestions check the keyword tool in the marketplace's own ads panel. when setting up a campaign the system shows you estimated search volumes and competition levels for free.

On your own website, brand identity and clean design take priority; however, a marketplace is a massive bazaar where consumers decide in seconds. Your title needs to feed the technical parameters into the search algorithm while instantly showing the mobile shopper the size and color they're looking for at first glance.

when we first started we kept the titles short, turns out competitors were stuffing dimensions and fabric info into the title to pull customers from search. search traffic bounced back big time once we fixed that definitely expand your titles.

so if we update the product title later do the existing reviews and ratings get wiped, or does the ranking just get recalculated from scratch?

Exactly like that. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

Proven by experience.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

I'm on watch duty and read the thread. Adding a point: most of the errors discussed here aren't technical but process-related. Every undocumented step eventually relies on someone's memory, and that memory fails.

To get into the details: Everyone rushing into marketplace keyword research gets stuck at the same point.

The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule. Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Im a small business, let me explain from my side. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
