Doing keyword research myself — where should I start and how should I choose?

We've been making boutique office furniture in Bursa for two years. Until now, most of our orders came via word-of-mouth and architect referrals, but we now want to reach corporate clients directly through our own e-commerce site. Last month we requested proposals from three different SEO agencies; they wanted retainers between 25,000 TL and 40,000 TL per month. Since we can't easily afford that fixed cost right now, I decided to handle the keyword research and basic content architecture myself.

We have around 80 products on our site and want to keep a blog active too. But I'm unsure how to manage this without paying hundreds of dollars a month for expensive research tools. Should I target high-volume general terms, or go for more niche queries? What steps should I follow when figuring out search intent and structuring pages?

Short answer: You can build an intent-focused keyword list without paid tools just by using Google autocomplete, related searches, and Google Search Console data. Rather than targeting high-volume broad terms initially, you need to focus on long-tail keywords that show clear buying intent.

Start with these steps: First break your products into logical categories (e.g., ergonomic office chair, conference table acoustic panel). Type these core terms into Google and look at the suggestions in the search bar and the related searches at the bottom. These phrases clearly show what people are looking for regarding pricing, sizing, materials and models. Dump these into a spreadsheet.

Second, separate search intent. A query like "office chair" usually means someone is browsing models or looking for info and competition is cutthroat. However, someone searching for "mesh ergonomic office chair" or "desk for small office" is much closer to pulling out their credit card. Optimize your product and category pages around these specific searches. On the blog side, write guides answering informational questions like "how to choose an office chair" or "small office layout ideas."

Finally monitor Google Search Console regularly after publishing your pages. Keywords where your site earns impressions but no clicks are your prime opportunities to update content and tweak page titles.

Don't pay too much mind to people saying you can't fly blind without volume data but with massive retail chains dominating furniture, don't write a single line targeting broad terms like "office desk." You'll just burn your energy and get discouraged.

When putting my own list together, I followed these three rules and saw huge benefits: 1) Map only one primary search intent per product page; don't target the same term on two different pages and cannibalize yourself. 2) Check seasonal trends for terms via Google Trends. 3) Look at the title and meta description tags of page-one competitors and note any questions they left unanswered.

For our niche products, instead of spending a 30.000 TL monthly agency budget, we spent 6 months producing content solely around long-tail keywords. We weren't even in the top 50 for broad terms, but we ranked in the top 3 for specific 4-5 word product queries, and our conversion rate hit 4,2%.

the 'people also ask' box at the bottom of google search results is literally a goldmine... turning those questions directly into blog titles and writing two clear paragraphs answering them gets you ranking within weeks.

Do you handle delivery and assembly within Bursa? If you have a local logistics advantage definitely include the city and district in your keywords. Local searches like 'Bursa office furniture' have much lower competition compared to national queries.

Open a spreadsheet right away. Set up columns for 'Keyword', 'Search Intent (Commercial / Informational)', 'Target Page', and 'Status'. Open the free Keyword Planner in the Google Ads dashboard and jot down the estimated volumes alongside them. That way, as your pages grow, you won't lose track of what you targeted where.

The most common mistake in search engine optimization is unnecessary keyword stuffing. Ensuring your copy is fluent and informative for the corporate executives purchasing your products—rather than written for search engines—is the key to long-term ranking success.

When I launched my first site, I wasted months going after massive keywords like 'best shoes' and didn't make a single penny. The moment I narrowed it down to specific product features like 'leather running shoes for wide feet', orders started rolling in that very week.

Youre right, Ive been down that road too. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.

I don't think this advice fits everyone. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Let me share my experience. If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have no experience with keyword research, so I'm asking. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

You're right. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

I agree, and Id like to emphasize that. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.

i can't fully agree with this.. but trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

this is my opinion I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later. If you post the result here, it will help others too.
