Moved analytics to GA4 and now we're completely lost — is the GA4 setup assistant actually enough for clean data?

We run an e-commerce site selling handmade ceramics in the US with a small team of 4. We do about 18,000 USD a month in revenue... When we saw the warning that the old analytics tool was shutting down we ran the GA4 setup assistant wizard in the dashboard... We clicked through a few confirmation buttons, got all green checkmarks, and the system told us everything was successfully connected. I mean so we assumed the migration was done without any issues.

But when we checked the data last month it was an absolute mess. While our store admin shows 140 orders the analytics dashboard only tracked 65 conversions. On top of that nearly half of our incoming traffic is listed as direct or unassigned, and basic metrics we used to rely on like bounce rate have been replaced with different definitions entirely.

What does this assistant tool actually set up behind the scenes, and what is it missing? Which settings do we need to manually configure after setup, and where should we verify the data to make sure it's clean and reliable?

Short answer: The setup assistant is just an introductory tool that creates a basic data stream and links the standard tracking code to your site; it is nowhere near enough to produce clean data. It cannot automatically configure e-commerce purchase events, checkout steps, or domain referral exclusions.

The assistant showing green checks only means a basic data signal is reaching the property from your site. For accurate tracking, you need to manually handle these steps: 1) Increase the data retention period from the default 2 months to 14 months. 2) Exclude external payment gateways from your referral list; otherwise, when a customer pays and returns, a new session starts, breaking your traffic source attribution into unassigned or referral. 3) Block your own office and home IP addresses using internal traffic filters.

The main reason your e-commerce data is incomplete is that order parameters aren't migrated automatically. You need to set up a custom trigger on your order confirmation page that passes revenue, transaction ID/SKU, and currency values. After that, you can't trust the data until you place a test order from your browser and verify in DebugView that every single parameter is firing in real time.

All the wizard does is drop a basic pageview tag. The most critical piece for e-commerce sites is the dataLayer. If transaction ID, tax, shipping, and the items array aren't being pushed inside the purchase event, you'll miss half your orders. Browser caching or ad blockers will also cause drops; it's tough to get zero data loss without server-side tagging anyway.

We sell wholesale auto parts in New Jersey and had 30 out of 85 orders missing. When we dug into it, the session was getting dropped as soon as the customer got redirected to a third-party gateway for credit card processing. Once we added our payment provider's domain to the referral exclusion list, our numbers matched up right away. The setup wizard will never do this for you.

Quickest check you can do right now: Go to Admin in the dashboard, find "List unwanted referrals" under Data Streams. Add the domain of the bank or payment processor you use there. Then place a test order in an incognito window and watch the event fire in the Realtime report with your own eyes.

same mess happened to us wizard showed all green so we thought we were set turned out zero conversions were actually defined but trying to get ecomm properly hooked up without tag manager is basically impossible anyway.

What e-commerce platform are you running on? Most out-of-the-box platforms have standard plugins that automatically fire the purchase code, but if it's a custom-built site, your developer needs to manually script the event onto the order thank-you page. Need to know the tech stack to pin down where the issue is.

Google rushed this assistant out not to actually solve users' problems but to prevent mass voids in dashboards while sunsetting the old version. Thousands of businesses trusted the wizard without adjusting settings and their data is total garbage right now. Don't make any business decisions based on assistant reports without doing a clean professional setup from scratch.

The Unassigned traffic problem usually comes down to two main things. First standard campaign parameters (UTMs) on your inbound ad links are either missing or formatted incorrectly. Second, GA4 can't identify the session-start event. If you clean up your tagging structure and configure your referral exclusions that traffic will properly sort into the right channels.

Definitely don't forget to switch the default data retention from 2 months to 14 months, otherwise your historical exploration reports will be completely blank after two months.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

Good luck with that.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

If you're going this route sort this out first. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

If you have questions write them; I'll answer as best I can.

You're right. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Don't miss this: A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule. Hope this helps.
