They keep talking to me about "SEO positioning": what is it exactly and when should you invest in it?

i recently founded an interior design and renovation company in Turin focusing on commercial offices and restaurants... we are a team of five, and thanks to our professional network the first three months went reasonably well but we want to grow the business digitallly too. like a local agency I've been talking to insists that we need "posizionamento SEO" (SEO positioning).

they are asking for 650 EUR a month with a minimum 12-month contract then to be honest I'm new to digital marketing. what exactly is this SEO positioning thing? is there some magic formula running bhind the scenes to push my site up on Google, or is it just writing content and tweaking technical settings?

does it make sense for a newly established service business like ours with cash flow not yet steady, to tie up 650 EUR a month into SEO at this stage? what tangible results should I expect in the first 6 months or should I just put that budget directly into paid ads for now?

Short answer: SEO positioning is the complete bundle of technical infrastructure work, content production, and industry authority-building that keeps your website steadily ranking on the first pages of search engine organic results for the commercial services and keywords your target audience searches for. For a newly launched local service business with tight cash flow, rather than immediately locking yourself into a 12-month agency contract, it is far more sensible to first complete your local map listings along with basic site content, and then gradually start investing in organic search.

SEO positioning isn't magic; it rests on three pillars. The first is technical foundations: your site loading fast, being mobile-friendly, and being easy for search engine bots to crawl. The second is content: crafting detailed service pages and case studies targeting specific terms your potential clients search for, such as restaurant renovations or office fit-outs in Turin. The third is authority: earning genuine inbound links and citations from local directories, industry portals, and press outlets.

As a new business, expecting the phone to ring off the hook from SEO in the first 6 months will only lead to disappointment; organic rankings usually take 6 to 9 months to settle in. Instead of locking in 650 EUR every month, I suggest this approach initially: set up your Google Business Profile completely, upload high-res photos of completed projects, and gather client reviews there. Put a portion of your budget into local search ads that drive immediate conversions to generate cash flow. Once the company's capital is solid, then commit to long-term SEO retainers.

In a localized, high-ticket niche like interior design, "local SEO" is a lifesaver compared to traditional national SEO. Optimizing your Google Maps presence and building city-specific case study pages to catch people searching around Turin often delivers a much faster ROI than expensive agency packages.

Correction: I misremembered the figure, it was a bit lower.

In a similar industry in Milan, we allocated a 500 EUR monthly SEO budget during our first year. We got zero leads for the first 4 months and I was ready to fire the agency. But starting around month 7, we hit page one for "ristrutturazione ufficio milano", and just two large office contracts that came in more than tripled our return on the entire year's SEO spend.

Before committing to a 12-month contract with the agency, ask for this: set a 3-month trial period where they fix on-page technical issues and optimize at least 5 of your core service pages. Have them report progress transparently every month based on ranking shifts for Turin-focused local keywords.

Be skeptical of agencies demanding 12-month lock-ins. Many of them just make a few basic tweaks in the first two months and spend the remaining ten months sending auto-generated ranking reports while cashing your monthly check. Make sure every single deliverable they will produce each month is spelled out line by line in the contract.

For the 650 EUR on the table, they need to explicitly commit to: 1) A technical site audit covering speed and mobile responsiveness. 2) Local keyword research specifically for the Turin area. 3) Producing at least 2 original project/service pieces of content per month. 4) Getting listed in reputable local directories across Italy.

if you're a new company you need cash first. personally id put that 650 euros straight into maps and targeted search ads to make the phone ring organic growth should be step two.

in the service industry the best SEO is real photos of completed jobs and reviews from happy clients. first, put up detailed photos of those great restaurant renovations on your site and clients will start finding you once they see the work anyway.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Let me clarify the technical side. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Just a heads-up. Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

There are three things to check when doing this. Processes without records never improve because you don't know what to fix.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Correct in theory, but it doesn't work that way in practice. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Any comment made without a control group is just a guess. That's all sorry if I went on too long.

I'm writing this so you don't make the same mistake. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

I have a question. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Yes, that's exactly how it is with what is seo positioning. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

How did you solve this? When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.
