I want to set up a Google Business Profile, what should I look out for during initial setup?

we just opened a boutique pottery and design studio in Nilüfer, Bursa. we sell handmade goods at retail in our shop and also host weekly pottery workshops. i want to set up a Google Business Profile so customers can easily find us on Google Maps and so we show up in searches like "Nilüfer pottery studio".

looking into it online, Ive seen that a lot of businesses get suspended in their very first week because of wrong category selection address mismatches or not having a storefront sign. some shop owners even said their verification code postcard didnt arrive for months or that their video verification was rejected multiple times.

setting this profile up from scratch myself what are the absolute technical and administrative essentials I need to watch out for at the start? how should I structure the setup so I don't run into account locks or suspensions later on?

Short answer: The primary way to prevent an initial suspension is to enter your business name exactly as it appears on your storefront sign and official documents, pick a single and most accurate primary category, and have your proof-of-physical-presence documents ready. Avoiding keyword stuffing in your business title and uploading clear photos of your storefront with its signage will ensure a smooth launch.

The first thing to watch during setup is your business name. If your shop is named "Toprak Seramik", don't add things like "Toprak Seramik - Nilüfer Pottery Classes & Gift Workshop" to the title. The system flags this as manipulation and may suspend your profile instantly. The second critical detail is category selection: choose "Pottery Studio" or the closest core match as your primary category; add other offerings like workshops or gifts as secondary categories.

For verification, most businesses are now prompted for a continuous live video recording. This must be filmed in a single, uninterrupted take: capture the street sign, the exterior of your shop and its signage, unlock the front door to walk in, and show evidence that proves you run the place, like a POS terminal or your tax registration certificate (vergi levhası). Making sure your address formatting matches your official certificate and utility bills word-for-word will significantly speed up approval.

NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone) is everything. The phone number and full address you enter must match your website, your Instagram profile, and your utility bills down to the comma. If the algorithm can't cross-match this data, your trust score drops and verification gets tough.

When recording the verification video for the café I opened last month, I got rejected three times because I didn't show the storefront sign from a distance. In the end, I started the video from the street, captured the sign, the building number, and the cash register behind the counter all in one take, and got approved within 48 hours. You have to show details.

Whatever you do, don't change core details like your business hours, phone number, or address until verification is fully complete. Enter them accurately once during setup and leave the profile untouched until it's approved. Any edits made during the first few days can trigger suspicious activity flags.

whatever u do don't stuff keywords in the business name field. just put nilüfer seramik and move on. also don't use stock photos from the internet, just take real pics of the inside and outside of the shop.

Does your shop have a standalone street-level entrance and permanent signage clearly visible from outside? Locations inside shopping arcades or residential apartments face much stricter video review guidelines, so what's your signage situation?

Keep these three things ready at your desk: 1) A recent utility bill or lease agreement under the business name. 2) Clear daytime photos of your storefront signage. 3) An operating hours plaque displayed where customers can see it. You might need to show these in the video.

It's best to handle the setup yourself; never hand primary owner access to outside third parties. Create the profile using your company's own official email domain. Once verified, make sure to reply to your first customer reviews in a professional tone directly from your own business account.

I went through the same thing. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Looking at it as a process, the picture changes. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation not just their content.

Hope this helps.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

The most overlooked point about google business profile setup is this: Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

Thanks for writing this that's the right way. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

Good luck with that.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

if you post the result here, it will help others too.

I went through the same thing two years ago. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.
