A setting got messed up on Google Business Profile — should I make the edit myself?

We have a business profile for our boutique bakery and cafe in Bursa that's been active for about 4 years, with over 450 reviews and a 4.8 rating. Nearly forty percent of our customers come directly from map searches. Last week we updated our outdoor sign and expanded our menu concept a bit.

Because of that, I wanted to change our primary category from 'Bakery' to 'Cafe', update the description, and fix a slight mismatch in our building door number. But from what I hear, touching basic details like this can immediately get the profile suspended or trigger a video verification request, leaving it closed for weeks.

Should I just log into the dashboard and do this business profile editing myself, or get help from a local SEO specialist? Is there a safe way to update the category and address while minimizing the risk of getting suspended?

Short answer: You can make these edits yourself without needing an outside agency but you shouldn't make all the changes at once; proceed gradually. Making bulk changes on sensitive fields like address, category, and business name on the same day gets flagged as suspicious activity by the algorithm and leads straight to a review or suspension.

Follow a specific sequence for a safe update. In the first step, only update the business description and menu photos, then wait 3-4 days for the system to approve them. In the second step change the category; while making 'Cafe' the primary category, definitely keep 'Bakery' as a secondary category on the profile so you keep your old search volume. A few days after this change gets approved smoothly, move on to the most critical step: fixing the door number.

Once an address change is triggered there's a high chance Google will ask for re-verification. Be prepared for a potential video verification by being ready to shoot a single, continuous video showing your storefront sign, the street sign, your tax certificate (vergi levhası), and yourself unlocking the door and walking in. As long as your documents and signage are consistent there's no need to blow money on a specialist.

If the slight door number mismatch doesn't cause the map pin to drop on the wrong street and delivery couriers can find the place easily I'd say don't touch the address at all. Just change the category and move on that's the least risky route.

We changed our restaurant's primary category last month. The profile didn't get suspended, but it took a full 48 hours to get approved, and during that time our map impressions fluctuated by about 20 percent. It went back to normal afterward.

The Google algorithm cross-checks any address and name changes you make on the profile against your website's contact page, trade registry records, and local business directories. Update the address on your own website before making any changes so the data doesn't conflict.

definitely don't change both the address and category on the same day. a friend had a raw meatball shop and changed both at once profile got suspended, took them 25 days of hassle to get it reopened and revenue dropped by half.

Agencies don't have a direct hotline to Google HQ either. They just click the exact same buttons in the same dashboard. If it gets suspended, they'll ask you for your storefront sign and tax plate anyway. Don't throw your money away on a middleman.

Things you should have ready to file an appeal in case of a suspension: 1) A copy of your up-to-date vergi levhası, 2) A recent utility bill (electricity or water) in the business name, 3) A clear photo of the new storefront sign taken from outside showing the street.

450 reviews and a 4.8 rating takes a ton of hard work, whatever you do dont panic and rush it and take it step by step dont forget to keep bakery as a secondary category and dont lose your local crowd.

I completely agree. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

There's one point I'm curious about. Everyone rushing into business profile editing gets stuck at the same point.

Thanks, this was very helpful. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

Timely topic. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

If I were you I'd go this route.

I disagree with you on this point. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.
