we run an e-commerce store based in Berlin selling industrial kitchen equipment and spare parts. we manage an ad spend of around 1,400 EUR per month. to accurately measure the true ROI of our campaigns we finished setting up conversioon tracking in the ads dashboard last week. we placed the tags on the post-purchase thank you page and the quote request confirmation screen.

looking at the data from the last three days, thogh we noticed a massive discrepancy. the ad dashboard reports 42 conversions. but when we check our internal order and CRM system, we only have 11 real orders and 4 quote submissions logged for the exact same timeframe. this huge difference is completely throwing off our budget optimization.

how can I test and verify conversion tracking on my own to see if it's functioning properly, whether it's counting the same user multiple times, or if there's a technical bug?

Short answer: A discrepancy between the conversion count in your ad dashboard and the actual order count in your backend usually boils down to missing transaction ID deduplication and page refreshes being logged as new conversions each time. To verify your setup, run controlled test purchases using the browser console and tag preview tools to inspect the payload request parameters.

The first thing you need to check is your trigger logic. When customers finish an order they might stay on the confirmation page and refresh it or close their browser and reopen the tab later from their history, loading the thank you page again. If your tag is set to fire unconditionally on every page load, a single order can easily register as multiple conversions. To fix this pass the unique order number rendered on the thank you page as a transaction ID parameter to the ad platform, and set the counting method in the dashboard to "One" rather than "Every".

Follow these steps to test: 1) Open your tag manager's preview mode and place a test order on your site from scratch. 2) When you hit the thank you page, verify that the conversion tag fires exactly once. 3) Refresh the page and confirm whether the tag fires a second time. Also, keep in mind Germany's strict data privacy laws: your cookie consent banner plays a huge role here, so make sure non-consenting users aren't causing skewed or duplicate counts during form submissions.

Open your browser's Developer Tools and switch to the Network tab. In the filter box, type the data collection endpoint of your ad provider. Once you land on the thank you page, make sure the outgoing network request returns a successful status code and that the payload includes the correct order value and transaction ID. If refreshing the page sends the exact same request again, you're missing deduplication on the backend/code level.

We had the same thing happen with a 1,200 EUR budget running campaigns in Frankfurt: the dashboard showed 60 conversions while warehouse fulfillment only had 18 orders. Turns out customers navigating back to the thank you page kept triggering new sessions. The minute we implemented an order ID filter, our ad metrics matched our real sales perfectly.

Duplicate tag firing aside, if you're counting a button click on the quote request form directly as a conversion, your numbers will inevitably get inflated. If a user fills out the form incompletely and hits the submit button three times in a row, the system might register three separate conversions. The trigger needs to be tied to a successful response from the server, not the button click itself.

In your ad dashboard conversion settings, switch the counting method from "Every" to "One". This is basically mandatory for lead forms; even if the same person submits the form three times in a row, your business only gets one lead. This simple tweak alone will immediately clean up a huge chunk of the bloated numbers in your dashboard.

same thing happened to us, the thank-you page url was left public and every time bots crawled it the counter went up in the dashboard. made the page session-based and redirected direct visits without parameters back to the homepage numbers got fixed instantly.

A crucial aspect that shouldn't be overlooked during setup is the consent management platform integration. Check how the system behaves when visitors from Germany reject cookie consent or grant only partial consent. Delayed reporting due to conversion modeling can also cause temporary spikes in the dashboard.

Did you hardcode the tags directly into the source code, or are you firing them through a container manager? Also, what attribution model is set in the dashboard—last click or data-driven?

Don't get discouraged, almost every business runs into these kinds of technical glitches during the first week of setting up conversion tracking. Catching it before burning through your budget is a huge plus. A quick, controlled test in preview mode for a couple of minutes should pinpoint the source of the issue right away.

Here's how it went for us. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I feel the same way. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

I have a question, don't want to go off-topic though. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

I have a question. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

The most overlooked point about setting up conversion tracking is this: Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

Hope this helps.

I felt relieved reading this answer, so it's not just me. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.
