Thinking about buying a technical SEO tool — is it actually worth it at my scale, or are free tools enough?

I run a website where I sell my own online courses and publish industry guides. The site currently has around 400 content and course pages. It’s built on WordPress and I’m continually publishing new content.

Lately I’ve been considering getting a paid SEO crawler or audit tool to keep closer tabs on technical SEO issues (broken links, redirect chains, thin content, crawl budget waste). But the popular cloud-based comprehensive platforms cost around $100 to $130 a month, which works out to about 3,500 - 4,500 TL per month at current exchange rates.

For a small-to-midsize site like mine with 400-500 pages are paid technical tools truly necessary? Or are the free console data from search engines and free desktop crawlers plenty for this scale? At what threshold does upgrading to a paid tool actually make sense?

Short answer: For a 400-500 page content and course site, paying a recurring subscription of over $100 a month is completely unnecessary. The official search console data provided by search engines alongside the free versions of desktop crawler software (which typically allow up to 500 URLs) are more than enough for your current setup.

You can manage your technical audits completely free at this size using this workflow: 1) Download a reputable free desktop crawler. These tools usually give you free crawls up to 500 pages; they will flag every 404 error, redirect loop, duplicate title, and missing meta tag in a single report. 2) Review the "Pages" (Indexation) report in your search console weekly. You'll see straight from the horse's mouth which pages aren't indexed and why (like duplicate content or crawled - currently not indexed warnings). 3) Use free page speed analysis tools and the console's Experience tab to audit page speed and Core Web Vitals.

The real need for paid cloud platforms usually kicks in when your site grows past thousands of URLs, when you run an e-commerce site with dynamic filters that eat through crawl budget, when you need automated daily technical regression tracking, or when you want in-depth competitor analysis. Right now, taking that 4,000 TL a month and putting it toward creating top-notch content or marketing will give you a far better return.

I've been managing a boutique e-commerce site with 1,200 products for two years using nothing more than a one-time yearly desktop tool license (around $259) and search console. I’ve never once needed a $120/month cloud tool. At 400 pages, a monthly sub is just throwing money away.

It helps to understand the difference between free desktop crawlers and search console. The console provides retroactive, delayed data, while a desktop crawler inspects the live HTML code on the spot. Since you only have 400 pages, you can run a full crawl within the free quota and catch canonical or noindex blunders in minutes.

instead of sinking 4k lira a month into an seo tool use that cash to film new course content or add it to your ad budget then honestly buying a paid tool for 400 pages is like installing an enterprise erp system for a corner grocery store.

Just fire up your free desktop tool once a month and run a full crawl. Open the exported spreadsheet and filter by "Status Code: 404" and "Duplicate Title 1". Honestly, sorting out just those two columns covers most of your technical bases.

A lot of people think buying a tool magically fixes their rankings. Those tools just spit out lists of technical flaws; if you don't understand why something should be fixed or how much weight search engines actually give it, you're just paying to stare at red warning badges on a dashboard.

This isn't a technical error. It means the search engine bot crawled your page but didn't consider it unique or high-quality enough to be worth indexing for now. You can flesh out the content on these 40 pages and add internal links to them from your more popular pages to get them reviewed again.

The answer above hits the nail on the head. Mistakes made on the technical SEO tool side are usually reversible but expensive.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

don't miss this: Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

if I were you, I'd go this route.

Do you think this works at any scale? Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Let me write how it's done in practice. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Hope this helps.

My question might sound amateurish, sorry about that. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

i felt relieved reading this answer so it's not just me. the biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right. good luck with that.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. I mean internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

If I were you I'd go this route.
