Should I set up a separate Google Maps listing for my second branch or just update the existing one?

We've been running an auto repair shop in Frankfurt for 6 years, and we have over 140 organic reviews and a 4.8 rating on Google Maps. A significant portion of our customers call and book appointments directly through Maps searches. Now we're opening our second branch in the neighboring city of Offenbach, and the official opening is two weeks away.

I'm torn on how to handle the Maps listing for the second location. Should I add the new address as a branch under our existing business profile, or should I create a completely separate, brand-new Maps listing from scratch? I'm worried that updating the existing listing might wipe out our old reviews and local rankings.

I know that local business verification in Germany has become strictly audited lately usually requiring video or postcard confirmation. What's the best way to build local search visibility for the new branch from the ground up, while leveraging the first location's authority and staying fully compliant with the guidelines?

Short answer: Absolutely do not update your existing listing for the second branch. You need to create an entirely separate new business profile under the same manager account. Changing the address on the existing listing will completely reset your first branch's local authority and Maps rankings in Frankfurt.

In Google Business Profile's architecture, every physical location must have its own dedicated listing, address, local landline phone number, and review pool. What you need to do is go to the Google dashboard where you manage your current profile, select "Add business," and register your Offenbach address using the exact same brand name. That way, both profiles are grouped under the same account but show up independently on Maps based on their geographic locations.

Reviews from your first location will not carry over; every branch has to build its own rating from scratch. However, to leverage your brand authority, you should create separate landing pages for both locations on your website and point the new profile's website link to the Offenbach page. That way, organic authority signals will quickly support the new branch's Maps visibility.

In Germany, new listing verifications are mostly completed via live video recording showing your storefront signage, street sign, and working space. Don't create the listing until your outdoor sign is up and the address on your official tax certificate is confirmed; otherwise, the profile will get suspended and the appeal process takes weeks.

Never change the existing address, that's the most fatal mistake in this business. If you update the current listing, you'll vanish from Frankfurt searches entirely. Open a second profile under the same business name and hook up a local Offenbach landline; using a number with a local area code instead of a mobile increases trust during verification.

We went through a similar process with our Cologne and Bonn locations. Visibility was super low for the first two months after opening the second branch profile. Once we added branch-specific structured data to our website and registered with local directories using the exact same address, incoming calls jumped significantly by month three.

Here's the playbook for the launch: 1) Click add a new business in your existing dashboard, 2) Keep the brand name exactly identical to the first location, 3) Fill in the business hours and local landline completely, 4) Complete the video verification right after the signage is hung up.

definitely dont update the current profile or youll lose frankfurt... add the second location under the same email... like reviews wont transfer, but hand out little freebies and ask for qr code reviews from the first customers visiting the new shop itll pick up quick.

Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of tacking the city name onto your brand name. A lot of shops add the city to their profile title trying to rank in local search but Google treats this as name manipulation and can suspend both locations at once. What's on your physical sign must match your profile character for character.

When shooting the verification video do it in one continuous, uncut take: start from the street sign show the exterior shop signage, then unlock the front door with your key and walk through the service area inside. In Germany they've switched almost entirely to video over postcards, and if there isn't permanent signage by the door they reject it immediately.

Congrats on the new shop! honestly when we opened our second location, we were worried the dashboard would turn into a mess, but managing both branches from a single screen is super convenient. Even though reviews start from zero, you can ask regular customers from your first shop who live nearby to swing by and grab those first 15-20 reviews pretty fast.

Have you updated the legal notice (Impressum) on your website? In Germany, Google can cross-reference the commercial register and branch addresses listed on your site during Maps verification. Is the second address clearly visible on your website?

I have an objection here. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Good luck with that.

I'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I think it's hard to be that definitive about creating a google maps listing. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I went through the same thing two years ago. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

You're right, I've been down that road too. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

Hope this helps.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
