Got a site SEO audit done: Do the urgent items in the report actually affect rankings?

We are a wholesale business manufacturing industrial packaging materials. When RFQ inquiries through our corporate website ground to a near-complete halt over the past six months, we had a professional site SEO audit done. An outside consultant we hired handed us a comprehensive 40-item audit report.

Right at the top of the report are 14 urgent critical errors flagged in red. like these include technical stuff like missing image alt tags, meta description lengths on certain pages, unminified/uncombined CSS files, and duplicate tag pages. They asked for 45,000 TL in implementation and optimization fees to fix these issues and clean up the technical backend.

I’m not very tech-savvy but its hard to believe all 40 items directly impact our rankings. tbh in audit reports like this, which ones are genuinely critical issues that kill search engine visibility and which ones are just cosmetic details thrown in to inflate the quote and close the deal?

Short answer: Out of 40 items copy-pasted from an automated audit tool, at most 4 or 5 directly drag your rankings down; the rest are secondary technical nitpicks tossed into the list to justify the price quote. Things like missing image alt tags or meta description character counts won't flatline your organic traffic on their own.

The issues in that report you actually need to take seriously and fix immediately are: 1) Incorrect noindex tags or robots.txt directives preventing search engine bots from crawling and indexing your pages, 2) Poor server response times and bloated media files directly tanking page load speeds, 3) Uncontrolled faceted navigation URLs and missing canonical tags generating massive duplicate content, 4) Layout shifts that make pages unusable on mobile devices.

On the other hand, a meta description going over 160 characters, missing alt text on a few product photos, or CSS minification won't tank your rankings by themselves. In wholesale packaging, traffic drops usually come from thin category copy that doesn't match search intent, neglected product pages, or lost high-quality backlinks.

Before committing budget to this consultant, insist they back up every single "urgent" item with actual data from your search engine webmaster console. Instead of burning time on tag lengths for pages that index fine anyway, focus strictly on the technical health of the key landing pages that actually bring in quote requests.

You need to divide that report into two buckets. Bucket one is indexing and crawlability issues; if the search engine can’t read the page, you can't rank, period—that is urgent. Bucket two is content and tag hygiene; things like meta descriptions influence click-through rate, but they definitely don't determine rank on their own.

Edit: asked below, I wrote the answer in the second message.

On our own site, we spent three full weeks manually filling in alt tags for 600 products. It didn't move rankings or traffic by even an inch. But the day we dropped server response time from 1.8 seconds down to 0.4 seconds, the number of products ranking on page one spiked noticeably.

Go check your free search console right now and open the pages tab. Look at the actual reasons listed for why pages aren't indexed. If the red flags in their report don't match the crawl errors there, most of those "urgent" claims are just agency sales tactics.

they just copy pasted an automated tool report classic trick... before giving them 45k check search console for 404s and test server speed yourself most of it can be sorted in two days for free.

Automated crawler tools flag every single imperfection in red because their job is to audit code against a theoretical ideal. Commercial ranking success is not the same as getting a perfect score from a crawler; plenty of imperfect sites dominate the top spots.

Nobody in the history of the web has dropped rank just because their meta description was three characters too long. Half the stuff on that 45,000 TL list can probably be resolved in two clicks inside your CMS. Print the report out and grill them on what each line item actually delivers.

Speaking frankly as a former agency employee, half the stuff on those 40-item reports is added purely to impress the client across the table. When a client sees a hefty checklist, they feel like they’re getting their money's worth. In reality, for a B2B niche like wholesale packaging, the core of the game is making sure pages can be crawled, targeting the right commercial queries, and keeping your RFQ form seamless on mobile. Don't blow your budget on cosmetic tags.

If budget is tight, you don't have to shell out that 45,000 TL right away. Ask the consultant for a revised quote covering only the top 5 essential items that deal with crawlability and indexing. The remaining text and content tweaks can be knocked out gradually in-house by your own team.

If I understood correctly you're saying: Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics. Good luck with that.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

The most overlooked point about site seo audit is this: Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

The most overlooked point about site seo audit is this: Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

That's all sorry if I went on too long.

Let me clarify the technical side. If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I completely agree. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

This is exactly what we experienced. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business. Good luck with that.

we experienced almost the exact same thing last year but the harder it is to reverse a decision the slower you should make it.

just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right... that's all sorry if I went on too long.
