Copywriter stuffing keywords into every paragraph — does this actually work?

Last month, we hired a freelance Russian copywriter for our e-commerce site where we sell wholesale and retail home textile products in Moscow. We ordered 30 pieces of content for our category and product pages, budgeting 2,500 rubles per piece for a total of 75,000 rubles. Our main goal was to gain organic search visibility for relevant categories.

Reviewing the first 10 pieces delivered, I noticed something seriously off. The writer shoehorned our exact keyword into almost every paragraph, sometimes even twice in the same sentence. The sentences sound grating even when translated across Russian and Turkish; reading it gives you a headache. When I asked the writer about this, they defended themselves saying 'This is exactly how SEO texts are written, search engine bots look at this keyword frequency.'

Honestly, I have a hard time believing algorithms operate in such a primitive, mechanical way. What actually are SEO texts in modern terms, and how can we tell keyword-stuffed garbage apart from genuinely useful SEO content? How should I structure a technical brief to set proper expectations with this writer?

Short answer: No cramming keywords into every single paragraph definitely doesn't work; in fact search engines will flag it as over-optimization or spam and push your site down. Modern SEO writing isn't about stuffing words to trick bots; it's about providing natural, in-depth guide-style content that completely satisfies the user's search intent.

Search engines have been using semantic analysis and NLP for years now. When evaluating a page, instead of counting exact-match keyword frequencies, they look at topic coverage, conceptual depth, and whether the visitor actually finds what they were searching for. The easiest way to tell quality SEO copy from a keyword dump is to read it out loud: if it flows logically like an industry expert explaining things directly to a customer it's solid; if sentences feel awkward and forced just to squeeze in the same phrase, it's doing more harm than good.

To keep things on track when commissioning copywriters here's how to structure your technical brief (TZ): 1) Never specify exact word repetition counts or keyword density percentages; instead, list 4-5 related concepts and synonyms that should appear naturally. 2) Identify the core questions a user wants answered on that page; make concrete subheadings like fabric types, care instructions, sizing and use cases mandatory. 3) Map out the H1 and H2 structure yourself beforehand, asking that the main keyword only appear naturally once in the intro and within these headings. 4) Require high informational density; state in your agreement that you won't accept fluff written purely to hit word counts.

Your writer is unfortunately stuck using playbooks from fifteen years ago. Back then, search engines would calculate on-page keyword density, and pages with a five percent density would rank well. Today, search engines measure actual user behavior; if a visitor lands on the page and leaves after two sentences because the copy sounds unnatural, that page won't maintain its ranking regardless of how many keywords it holds.

We made a similar mistake last year on our auto parts site in the Russian market. We didn't get a single organic order for three months because of 40 keyword-stuffed articles from a writer. The 2,000 rubles we spent per page went down the drain. Once we wiped those texts and added actual technical specs, assembly diagrams, and clear descriptions, organic traffic quadrupled within 60 days.

Before putting all the blame on the writer, check if they were given a proper brief. Business owners usually just hand over a keyword, say 'write us an SEO text for this,' and call it a day. Without a target audience definition fabric specs shipping details, or FAQs, the writer has no choice but to repeat the main keyword over and over to hit word counts.

Put a hold on the remaining 20 pieces immediately and definitely don't publish the 10 delivered ones as they are. Explain the issue to the writer and show them an example from a competitor or an article you like from another niche to demonstrate the natural tone you want. If they refuse to revise them, cancel the contract to protect the remaining 50,000 rubles and find someone capable of working with detailed briefs.

same thing happened to us last month. reading it melts your brain, feels like one bot telling a bedtime story to another bot. tell your writer straight up to write like a human, otherwise visitors bounce instantly and search engines penalize it right away.

Did you provide the writer with a list of customer questions? What do customers ask most via WhatsApp or phone before placing an order, and do the texts cover return policies or delivery timelines? If the writer solely focused on 'Moscow wholesale textiles,' the content is likely completely hollow.

Two years ago, a similar content disaster wiped all my category pages from search results. Frustrated with the writer, I sat down myself and drafted clean copy: bulleted 5 key questions customers usually ask me and wrote two paragraphs answering each. I only placed the keyword in the main heading and at the very end. Two months later, those categories hit page one.

Your writer probably last followed SEO trends back when flip phones were still popular. 'Bots look at this' is the go-to excuse for lazy writers who can't produce thorough well-researched copy. Bots understand context now; copy that scares away customers won't do your site any favors.

im writing this so you dont make the same mistake and btw if its your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

if rankings stay the same but clicks drop the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance. if you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I completely agree. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. Hope this helps.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

You're right. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

Proven by experience.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

Good luck with that.

I have a question. If it's your first time start small; scaling comes later.

If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

I'm in the same situation, that's why I'm asking. Everyone rushing into what are seo texts gets stuck at the same point.

Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.
