Does organic search engine optimization really take 6 months, and what should I do during that time?

We're three partners who just set up a small contracting business in the Paris suburbs doing home renovations, bathroom remodeling, and insulation. We launched our French website two months ago. Both freelancers we talked to about getting clients told us organic search engine optimization takes at least six months, and that we shouldn't expect any meaningful lead traffic before then.

With fixed overhead like shop rent, vehicle leases, and insurance, sitting around for six months with zero return is a huge worry for us. We know competition is fierce in this space, but we need cash flow coming in.

Is waiting six months really the standard for organic search engine optimization? What intermediate metrics can show us things are on track during these six months, and what kind of bridge strategy should we use to land jobs while we wait?

Short answer: Yes, for a brand-new domain in a competitive niche, organic search engine optimization usually takes four to six months before generating consistent phone calls and quote requests. Search engines need time to discover a new site, crawl the pages, deem it trustworthy, and rank it above entrenched competitors.

To avoid wasting this six-month wait, break the process into three phases: 1) Get the technical foundation and site architecture done in the first two months; create detailed, dedicated landing pages for each core service targeting local searches. 2) From month two onward, watch total impressions and ranking movements in Search Console. Even if quote requests aren't rolling in yet, jumping from position 80 to 20 for target keywords proves the work is paying off. 3) Use search engine ads as a temporary bridge to keep cash flow moving until organic rankings settle. Running low-budget ads aimed at people needing urgent repairs will bring in warm leads early on.

Paid ad data will also reveal which search terms actually convert into paying clients. That way, you can tailor your organic content directly around those high-yield keywords. As your organic rankings climb in months four and five, you can gradually taper down the ad spend.

The consultants were being upfront with you. Construction and renovation is one of the most cutthroat niches in search engines. There's no technical shortcut to fast-track authority for a fresh domain; it takes patience.

We launched a site in the same field last year. Zero organic leads for the first three months. Month four brought 3 requests, month five brought 8. After month six, we hit around 25 quote requests a month. Impressions hit an inflection point in month three—traffic builds up gradually, not overnight.

To keep tabs on your agency along the way, watch these three interim indicators: 1) The month-over-month growth trend in total organic impressions in Search Console, 2) The number of keywords breaking into the top 50, 3) A steady climb in indexed pages. If there's no movement across these three, the strategy isn't working.

Plenty of people hide behind the "it takes six months" excuse and do nothing for months. Yes, results take time, but technical issues should be sorted and pages indexed within the first 60 days. If you don't see a single bump in impressions on Search Console by the end of month two, the problem isn't the waiting period—it's poor work quality.

tbh we were losing our minds waiting around in the remodel business but wouldn't have made rent without running ads. tbh definitely don't rely only on organic and cut off paid entirely.

Don't go after broad competitive keywords right away. Ranking for "Paris home renovation" in six months is tough. Instead target long-tail keywords that combine specific suburbs or neighborhoods with things like "bathroom remodeling"—those pages can hit page one in just a few weeks.

For corporate businesses, organic search optimization is a long-term, sustainable investment channel. The return on investment for the budget allocated here will compound over time; however, to ensure short-term financial sustainability, supporting the process with search network ads is essential.

If I understood correctly you're saying: Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

i agree and I'd like to emphasize that. start with a small trial; don't commiit to everything at once.

this is my opinion, Im not claiming its absoluute truth.

i agree and I'd like to emphasize that then if you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

hope this helps.

Same here. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval. Good luck with that.

I felt relieved reading this answer, so it's not just me. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. Of course it varies if your situation is different.

I have no experience with organic search engine optimization, so I'm asking. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

I think differently. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Good luck with that.
