I'm doing Google keyword research myself — how do I pick terms that bring sales, not just traffic?

I run a small commercial refrigeration and industrial kitchen equipment rental business in Dubai. For the past three months, I've been handling our SEO keyword research completely on my own to boost our search rankings. Using Google autocomplete suggestions and free keyword planners, I produced content targeting high-volume terms. We managed to pull around 4,000 monthly visitors to the site, but the number of quote requests from that traffic is practically zero.

People land on the site, read the guide articles, and bounce; they don't even glance at our rental or quote request pages. Last month I also dropped 7,000 AED on Google Ads, only to realize later that I was getting empty clicks from broad searches. Doing this solo, how can I separate the keywords used by genuine high-intent B2B buyers from looky-loos just browsing?

Short answer: Broad terms with high search volume attract people looking for info, not clients ready to buy. To drive sales, ditch informational generic terms and target commercial-intent queries with words like quote, rental, wholesale, or specific technical model numbers.

In a B2B rental niche, queries like 'what is a cooling system' or 'how cold storage works' are mostly searched by students, technicians, or casual browsers. Even if they bring 4,000 visitors, none of them will fill out an inquiry form. You need to target long-tail phrases packed with commercial intent, like 'industrial chiller rental Dubai', 'daily cold room hire rates', or 'jobsite refrigeration unit quote'.

Check the Google SERP manually to test buying intent. If a search triggers sponsored ads at the top and corporate competitors ranking with dedicated pricing or quote pages, money is moving on that keyword. On the flip side, if page one is dominated by blog posts, wiki definitions, and YouTube videos, that search audience isn't in buying mode yet.

Split your content strategy in two: keep informational blog posts away from your primary conversion funnels, and optimize your core rental landing pages directly for the long-tail terms B2B procurement teams actually type into search.

Break search intent down into three buckets: informational navigational and transactional. 'Commercial fridge error codes' is informational, makes you zero dollars. 'Restaurant fridge rental Dubai' is transactional. Always tack words like rental, price, supplier, or wholesale onto your target searches.

Three quick filtering rules you can use right away: 1) Drop single-word terms with 5,000 monthly volume if they lack an action word. 2) Prioritize terms containing 'rental', 'price', or 'service' even if the volume is just 100. 3) Don't spend sales budget on keywords that don't have ads occupying the top four spots on Google.

In our generator rental business, we stopped chasing broad 8,000-volume keywords. We built pages for just 12 long-tail keywords searched 80-150 times a month, like 'monthly generator rental price'. Traffic plunged 70%, but incoming inquiries shot up from two to nineteen a month.

Have you looked at your Search Console to see what queries those 4,000 visitors came from? What are your top five queries by clicks?

Type your main service into the Google search box, hit space, and append 'prices', 'companies', or 'rental'. Whatever autocomplete recommends are the exact searches people run with their credit cards out; make those your page titles.

mate u spent 7k aed on ads but clearly didn't add negative keywords. if u don't negative match 'what is' 'diy' 'used', and 'repair' u're just burning cash on useless clicks.

Our first year, we celebrated hitting #1 for 'kitchen ventilation'. Every single call was an old lady asking about her broken range hood at home. The minute we switched to 'commercial exhaust hood installation contractors', we landed our first hotel contract.

I went through the same thing. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

I'd say don't rush. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Same here. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

This is my opinion, Im not claiming its absolute truth.

it's rare to find an explanation this clear. don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task then of course, it varies if your situation is different.

the answer above hits the nail on the head. i mean a competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation not just their content.

of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

The opposite happened to me thats why Im writing. Everyone rushing into keyword research gets stuck at the same point.

Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix. If you have questions write them; I'll answer as best I can.

The opposite happened to me, that's why I'm writing. anyway when making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.
