Created a Google Business Profile Card but It's Not Showing Up in Search, What Am I Missing?

About three weeks ago, I set up a Google Business Profile card for a small boutique cafe and bakery we opened in Turin. I'm pretty sure I filled out everything completely: opening hours, exact street address, landline number, and 15 high-quality photos of the space. After the video verification step, the green 'verified' status showed up in the dashboard.

Even so, unless we search for the exact shop name in quotation marks, our business card doesn't appear on Maps or search results at all. Even when standing 200 meters away from the cafe and searching 'cafe' or 'coffee' on a phone, every competitor around us shows up in the map pack, but our profile isn't even on the list.

How long does it take for a verified business card to rank organically in local results? Is there a critical step I missed for the algorithm to recognize the business as a new local entity?

Short answer: Just because your profile is verified doesn't mean it will immediately rank in local search results. New profiles lag in broad searches until they pass a trust threshold; to trigger visibility, you need primary category alignment, local consistency, and real customer engagement.

To speed up visibility, make sure you complete these steps: 1) Double-check your primary category. In the Italian market, if your spot is both a cafe and a bakery, pick the most searched term (like 'Caffetteria' or 'Panificio') as your primary category, and add the other as secondary. 2) Ensure your pin location on Google Maps matches your exact street door number.

3) If you have a website, make sure the name, address, and phone (NAP) format in the footer matches your profile down to the letter. Place a QR code by your shop window/counter and gather 8–10 reviews and ratings from actual customers who visit during the first two weeks. Customers mentioning your coffee and specific pastries in reviews will quickly boost your local relevance.

It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for new profiles to settle into the local algorithm. During this window, post updated photos of the space or product announcements at least twice a week to show the search engine the profile is active.

Check if a Place ID has been generated on Google Maps yet. Copy the link from the dashboard and open it in incognito. If the profile hasn't fully synced with the search index, it won't show in local searches—server sync can easily take 7–10 days.

Start collecting customer reviews right away. The algorithm sees a brand-new profile with zero reviews as a risk and won't push it in broad searches. Getting your first 5 reviews from real customers who actually bought something—not just friends and family—changes things immediately.

Ran into the same issue in Rome. Said the card was verified, but typing 'bakery' didn't show us on the map for 25 days. Turned out we had picked way too broad of a label for our primary category. Once we fixed the category and got 6 reviews, we popped up the following week.

Proximity isn't the only ranking factor. Across data from 40 local profiles we analyzed, listings with at least 8 reviews and 20 photos in their first 15 days got 3x more map impressions compared to dormant profiles at the exact same distance.

Did you hide the business address on the map or did you leave it visible as a physical storefront? Profiles set as service-area businesses are much harder to get listed in physical storefront searches.

In accordance with Google Business Profile guidelines, your signage name must match your business title on the profile exactly. If you added keywords or neighborhood names to your business name for SEO purposes, the profile might be filtered or suspended.

don't forget to post weekly. even a special holiday dicsount or a pic of a slice of cake from your menu makes the profile look active and speeds up indexing.

Let me write how it's done in practice. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

I have a question. Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

There are three things to check when doing this. If you get three different answers on a topic the question was asked wrong.

A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content. Good luck with that.

We need to make a distinction here. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

quick summary for newcomers: Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both siides remember it differently.

this is my opinion I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

The answer above hits the nail on the head. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

There's a trap here let me mention it. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.
