Cold-called by an agency offering a free SEO audit — what does this actually show, is it just a sales pitch?

We run a private dental clinic with 4 doctors in Kadıköy, Istanbul. Yesterday, a sales rep from a digital agency we've never heard of called us. They said they did a comprehensive crawl of our site and found '52 critical technical errors that require urgent attention' according to Google. They said they could email us their 18-page free SEO audit report right away, and that we should then retain them for ongoing SEO consulting at 25,000 TL per month.

Out of curiosity, I asked for the report. The PDF they sent looks completely spit out by some automated software. It's covered in red exclamation marks from top to bottom: dozens of line items stacked together like 'Meta description exceeds 160 characters', 'Missing alt tags on images', 'H1 tag not optimized'. Honestly, my doctor partners panicked, but I suspect this is just a fear-based tactic built for cold outreach.

What does conducting an SEO audit actually entail and what does it really tell you about a site? Which of these items in free automated reports actually impact our business, and which ones are just blown out of proportion to scare clients? How can we audit our own site without relying on outsiders?

Short answer: These free reports are almost entirely canned templates generated at the click of a button by automated audit tools. Their primary goal is to induce panic with red warning flags so you sign a monthly retainer. Even if some of the findings are technically accurate none of these items are catastrophic issues that will tank your search visibility overnight.

Spotting the exaggerations in these reports is pretty straightforward. Almost all of the items listed under '52 critical errors' are low-priority editorial omissions. For instance, missing alt text on three images or a blog post's meta description running a few characters too long will not trigger a Google penalty. Automated tools paint every single warning red with equal weight, which makes the whole thing look terrifying.

Conducting a real, high-quality SEO audit is completely different from spitting out a template report: 1) You analyze local search intent (e.g., whether patients are searching for 'Kadıköy implant prices' or 'oral surgeon specialist'), 2) You examine content depth and authority signals compared to competing clinics, 3) You audit actual crawlability and Google indexation status and 4) You measure how easily appointment booking buttons can be reached on mobile devices.

You don't need an agency to get an objective look at your situation. Just look at Google's own free official tools: Search Console and PageSpeed Insights. If the 'Pages' tab in Search Console shows no real crawl errors on your indexed pages and your Google Business Profile is active, you can safely ignore these panic-driven cold calls.

Log into your Search Console dashboard right now. If there are no red errors under 'Coverage' or 'Indexing', you have zero technical emergencies. As for missing alt tags, your front-desk receptionist who manages the clinic's CMS can knock those out in a single afternoon.

Plug the domain into a tool, export a PDF in three minutes, then go 'Doctor your site is on life support, pay us 25 grand a month to save it'. Neat trick tbh, zero overhead and if someone panics, that's an easy 25,000 TL in the pocket every month.

We fell into this exact trap two years ago for our clinic. Paid 20,000 TL a month for 6 months. All they sent us at the end of each month was that exact same automated PDF report turned green. Patient bookings didn't increase by even one.

Page speed could be worth looking into. Head over to Google PageSpeed Insights yourself and test the site. Check your First Contentful Paint (FCP) and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) times. Dental clinic sites usually run slow because of massive, uncompressed filling/implant photos stuffed into hero sliders; simply compressing those images takes care of the issue.

Search engine optimization for healthcare providers is subject to the Ministry of Health's Regulation on Promotional and Informational Activities in Healthcare Services. Automated tools cannot flag demand-inducing copy or covert advertising violations. These boilerplate audits offer zero regulatory or sector-specific compliance checks.

don't work with any agency trying to close deals by cold-calling with automated bot exports. a consultant who's actually good at what they do won't be cold calling you peddling red exclamation marks anyway.

For a local clinic, your single most critical SEO asset is your local map pack profile and genuine patient reviews. A missing comma flagged in an 18-page technical report won't gain or lose you a single patient. Keep your priorities straight and don't panic.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right. Good luck with that.

There is something to watch out for. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

Hope this helps.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Hope this helps.

I'd say don't rush. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is exactly what we experienced. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business. If I were you, I'd go this route.

Could you elaborate on that? The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.
