How do you set up a Google Business Profile, and is it hard to fix mistakes made during the initial signup?

We're opening a third-wave coffee shop in Cankaya, Ankara in two weeks. We've spent around 350,000 TL on renovations, equipment, and interior decor, and showing up in local searches is an absolute must to bring in nearby university students and office workers. I'm about to set up our Google Business Profile myself, but I keep hearing horror stories from other local owners about instant suspensions and rejected verifications.

A friend told me they waited weeks for approval just because their business name didn't match the storefront sign word for word, while another had their profile completely locked out after trying to change the primary category. On top of that, our outdoor signage was just mounted yesterday, and our business license and vergi levhasi just came through.

Which setup mistakes during the initial application are the hardest to recover from later? What exact precautions should we take before verification and during the registration process to get approved on the first try?

Short answer: The most critical factors when setting up a Google Business Profile are making sure the business name matches your legal paperwork and storefront sign letter-for-letter, and picking the right primary category. Stuffing keywords into your business name or haphazardly placing the location pin during initial registration will trigger suspensions that take weeks to resolve.

To get through it without hitches, follow these steps in order: 1) Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signage, vergi levhasi and social media handles; do not add neighborhood names, coffee shop or other descriptors to it. 2) Pick your true core service as the primary category—choose Cafe or Coffee Shop, for instance and leave everything else for secondary categories. If you change the primary category post-approval your profile goes straight into review.

During the verification step, you will most likely be prompted for a video recording. Before you hit record, plan a single continuous uncut shot showing the outdoor street sign, your permanent outdoor storefront signage, walking inside to show your business license the barcoded vergi levhasi and the point-of-sale area behind the counter. Choppy or blurry videos are rejected immediately.

Always enter permanent, dedicated contact details in the phone number and website fields. Do not touch or edit a single character in your address, phone, or category fields until the profile is verified and live; the system treats early edits on fresh accounts as an automated security red flag.

The 3 hardest mistakes to reverse during setup: 1) Stuffing extra keywords into your legal business name (flagged as spam). 2) Frequently swapping the primary category after launch (guaranteed suspension). 3) Requesting video verification before permanent outdoor signage is installed (instant rejection, and it can lock you out of postcard verification as well).

Make sure your GPS is toggled on while recording the verification video. If your browser's location data doesn't match the physical coordinates shown in the clip, the automated review will discard it right away. Also, capturing your POS terminal, invoice books, and the actual key unlocking the front door on camera gives your odds of approval a huge boost.

We got overexcited when launching and tagged 'Best Boutique Coffee' onto our business name. The profile was approved in an hour, but suspended the very next day. We appealed, sent photos of the sign, vergi levhasi, electricity bills... it took a full 24 days to get it unlocked. Didn't get a single customer off Google Maps during that entire month.

It is legally and operationally mandatory for your business registration to fully align with your legal entity documents. Any discrepancy between the trade name, the scope of activity stated on the business license, and the physical address on record with the tax office may prolong the review process. We advise keeping all documentation readily available.

our shop's permanent sign isn't up yet, but we have a banner with the name on it... would that banner count for video verification, or should I wait until the sign installation is done?

Definitely don't try it with a banner, Google reviewers count that as a temporary sign and will suspend the listing right away. If you apply before your backlit or permanent physical sign is installed you'll be stuck dealing with support for weeks. Don't rush it.

Don't worry at all, as long as your sign and tax certificate are ready and you follow the rules step by step, it's usually approved within 48 hours. Instead of filling out too many details right at the start, the safest way is to just enter the required basic fields and then add operating hours and photos after getting approved.

Let's separate the concepts, they're getting mixed up. People defend habits not processes. Resistance comes from there.

A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics. If I were you, I'd go this route.

I agree, and I'd like to emphasize that. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.

I have a question. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

Let me summarize the topic since several different answers were given. If its your first time start small; scaling comes later.

Good luck with that.

we got stuck at the same point for a while then the answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

this is my opinion I'm not claiming it's abssolute truth.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

the opposite happened to me that's why I'm writing and when making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

We need to take it step by step. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses. If I were you, I'd go this route.

Let me summarize the topic, since several different answers were given. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Good luck with that.
