Tried an SEO text generator — do these texts actually rank, or are they just filler, and how do I check?

We run an e-commerce site selling wholesale and retail technical hardware out of Düsseldorf. Our catalog has around 1,800 products and most of them previously only had the technical spec sheet directly from the manufacturer. To boost their organic visibility we set up an SEO text generator last month, auto-generated descriptions for 350 products in the first phase, and published them.

On the surface the descriptions are grammatically solid paragraphs packed with relevant keywords. However, even after 6 weeks, we havent seen any noticeable rank increases on Google nor any movement in organic clicks. In fact bounce rates went up on some pages. Im starting to suspect the content is just fluff that provides zero value to the user.

How can we measure the actual ranking impact of auto-generated texts? Which product categories should definitely be written by hand, and which ones can stick with automated templates? I'm looking for a clear vetting framework to make this distinction.

Short answer: To tell whether auto-generated text is actually driving rankings, don't just look at overall rank positions; look at trends in impressions and average position in Google Search Console. If the search engine crawls the page but doesn't serve impressions, or if users bounce within seconds of landing, the generated copy is just fluff that fails to satisfy search intent.

To set up a proper benchmark, don't leave those 350 products to chance. Split them into three equal groups: have the first group completely hand-edited with added technical use cases, leave the second group as-is with the auto-generated text, and revert the third group back to the plain technical spec table. Track impressions, clicks and dwell time differences over an eight-week window. This test will let your own data reveal which format the algorithm actually favors on your site.

The rule in catalog management is crystal clear: you must write your top-tier bestsellers—the ones driving the bulk of your revenue or profit margins—completely by hand. Those pages need authentic expert insights like specific standard compliances and material compatibility.

For the rest of the low-volume, standardized parts (like generic nuts washers or screws), automated systems are fine. But instead of letting the tool spin generic marketing copy, configure structured templates that simply convert the technical table's parameters into clear coherent sentences.

We tried the exact same route with our 2,400-part technical site. Generated auto-descriptions for 600 products, zero traffic bump over 4 months. Then we picked the 40 most-searched products and had someone write 150 words by hand using real craftsman terminology; traffic to those 40 products nearly quadrupled within two months.

Are you seeing 'Crawled - currently not indexed' warnings for those 350 pages in Search Console? When Google catches automated copy repeating itself, it might just skip indexing them altogether. That's the very first place you should check.

You can't write all of them manually, it's just not realistic. Do this instead: write detailed copy for the top 50 products by hand. For the rest of the auto-generated texts, delete the first two paragraphs and just leave 3-4 bullet points of concrete info under 'Applications' and 'Package Contents'. Trim the fluff.

AI copywriters generate absolute garbage for technical hardware. Instead of critical data like steel grade or torque specs, they churn out generic marketing cliches like 'make your job easier with this amazing screwdriver'. A German tradesman will abandon cart the second he reads that.

totally normal for bounce rates to spike nobody shopping for technical screws wants to read an essay. put the dimensions front and center push the text below the table minimize its prominence.

Run these 3 tests to spot if automated text is just fluff: 1) Strip out the brand and product name; if the text still works for 20 other products, it's trash. 2) Does it state which tools the part is compatible with? 3) Does it take over a minute to read while offering zero technical data?

We jumped in with the exact same excitement and it was a complete letdown. Turns out word count doesn't mean a thing. The customer only has one question: will this part fit my machine? The AI tool doesn't know that so it just fills the page with nonsense.

You're completely missing search intent. People looking for technical products aren't looking for a story, they're verifying specs. Instead of asking the generator for generic prose, give it rigid prompts to turn the data points from your table into clean, scannable micro-copy.

if I understood correctly youre saying: Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later. if I were you, I'd go this route.

we need to make a distinction here. honestly ranking is the result, search inetnt is the input but look at intent first.

if you have questions write them; I'll answer as best I can.

The answer above hits the nail on the head. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

I'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

Proven by experience.

Just a heads-up. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

Mistakes made on the seo text generator side are usually reversible but expensive. Hope this helps.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Good luck with that.

Just a heads-up. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.
