Hiring an SEO consultant for the first time: What do they actually do and how do you spot a good one?

We run a private medical clinic and aesthetic center in Rome providing services in both English and Italian. Our website gets around 6,000 organic visitors a month, and we want to scale that both domestically in Italy and on the medical tourism side. We decided to hire an SEO consultant for the first time, but the quotes we've received from the market are wildly inconsistent.

One is asking for 800 EUR a month and says they'll only provide reports, while another wants 2,500 EUR and claims they'll handle everything from content production to technical code fixes. We already have an in-house part-time web developer. What is the standard, concrete scope of work for an SEO consultant? Exactly what deliverables should they be putting on our desk, and how do we weed out people who don't know what they're doing or just resell automated tool exports during interviews?

Short answer: An SEO consultant is an expert who plans, prioritizes, and audits technical infrastructure, content architecture, and authority strategy to improve your site's search engine visibility. Their core job isn't to write code or draft clinical copy directly; it's to produce actionable specs and task lists for your developer and content team to execute.

There are three main deliverables you should expect once you start working together. In month one, they should deliver a comprehensive technical audit covering crawlability, indexing, site speed, and information architecture issues. Second, a keyword and content gap plan analyzing search intent around the treatments your clinic offers. Third, an ethical link-building strategy to build your domain authority.

The clearest way to gauge a consultant's quality is their working style. Run away from anyone guaranteeing "#1 rankings on Google" or treating their process as some kind of trade secret. A solid consultant won't throw out a proposal during the very first call; they'll ask to review your Search Console data, find out which clinic services are most profitable, and translate findings into task tickets your developer can actually understand.

Niche expertise in healthcare is doubly critical. They must understand Italian healthcare regulations as well as the expertise and trust signals search engines look for in medical content. Someone pitching 800 EUR will probably just download an automated tool report and forward it; for 2,500 EUR, you need to clarify whether that covers copywriters and technical implementation.

The price gap comes down to scope. Consulting is pure strategy and advisory; someone charging 800 EUR a month will just hand your developer a list saying "fix the redirect errors on these pages" and step back. The 2,500 EUR quote likely bakes in copywriter and developer labor. Since you already have an in-house developer, sticking to a purely strategy-and-audit-focused consultant will protect your budget.

You can measure a consultant's quality by how they write their specs. A good consultant doesn't say "improve your site speed"; they open a concrete technical ticket your developer can run with, like "eliminate render-blocking CSS, swap these three images to next-gen formats, and get server response time under 600 milliseconds."

Most consultants out there just export a PDF from some tool at the start of the month and email it to you with an invoice at the end. Ask this in the interview: "Once the technical audit is done, will you hop on a live call with our developer to walk through the items?" Drop anyone who dodges that question immediately.

Last year we hired a freelance consultant for 1.200 EUR a month for our dental clinic in Florence. For the first 3 months, traffic barely budged because all they did was clean up the technical foundation. Starting around month 5, the number of patients coming from implant and orthodontic searches doubled. SEO takes patience; don't trust anyone promising quick spikes right from month one.

When making your pick, follow these three steps: 1) Ask for past case studies in healthcare or local service industries. 2) Ask about their reporting frequency and which KPIs (organic forms, search volume, etc.) they'll track. 3) Have your developer get on a 15-minute technical call with the candidate.

The biggest mistake we made was hiring a consultant without getting our developer's input. Once they started working together, all they did was point fingers and everything stalled for 4 months. honestly definitely introduce the candidate to your in-house tech person beforehand; their chemistry matters a lot.

once we hire a consultant, do we just hand over the WordPress login and step back, or do we have to review and approve articles and page edits every single week?

Rule out anyone right away who doesn't provide a concrete task list or promises guaranteed search engine rankings.

i have no experience with seo consultant so I'm asking. btw if you don't write this down from the staart it leads to arguments later.

don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business then if I were you I'd go this route.

I'd say don't rush. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing. Good luck with that.

I feel the same way. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

I felt relieved reading this answer so it's not just me. The harder it is to reverse a decision the slower you should make it.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

the answer above hits the nail on the head. i mean when you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

of coourse it varies if your situation is different.

I was thinking the same thing. When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place.

Mistakes made on the seo consultant side are usually reversible but expensive. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Here's how it went for us. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.
