Pitching an AI-powered SEO package to me—what goes on behind the scenes, and does it actually make a difference?

We run a 14-employee industrial packaging and cardboard box manufacturing business in Bursa. Our website has been up for nearly 5 years, but we get practically zero organic leads. A digital marketing agency we met with last week pitched us an "AI-backed SEO and content operation" for 18,000 TL a month. According to them, their AI models will analyze competitor gaps, churn out 30 industry-specific articles a month, and get us ranking way faster than traditional methods.

The pitch sounds modern, but I have serious doubts. Does one-click, push-button copy hold any real value in Google's eyes, or will it just land our site straight into search engine spam filters? What concrete steps should actually be taken in an AI-driven SEO campaign, and should I evaluate the agency's success strictly on keyword rankings, or through other metrics?

Short answer: AI on its own is not an SEO strategy; it is merely a tool that accelerates research, data clustering, and drafting. An agency simply feeding prompts to an AI and dumping the output onto your site won't earn you rankings and will actually jeopardize your domain authority; genuine value comes from pairing these tools with a skilled editor and technical optimization.

In an actual SEO workflow, AI should be deployed in three areas: 1) Analyzing search intent to map out technical details competitors missed, 2) Identifying industry terminology and semantic connections to build content briefs, and 3) Rapidly assembling on-page technical meta tags and schema markup. If the agency is promising 30 articles a month, they are most likely publishing shallow, automated prompt churn. Generic AI outputs don't understand technical nuances like corrugated cardboard basis weight or bursting strength tests, which builds zero trust with either search engines or actual clients.

When measuring success, judge the agency on these metrics instead of keyword rankings: organic search contact forms or phone conversions, valid clicks in Search Console, and average dwell time. Make sure the contract explicitly requires every piece of content to be signed off by an industry editor, and regularly weigh incoming organic inquiries against your 18,000 TL monthly investment.

Promising 30 articles a month is an immediate red flag. With AI they can crank out ten a day if they want, but Google is entirely focused on real-world experience and expertise now. How is an AI that has never stepped foot in a factory going to write authoritatively about cardboard burst resistance? You'll just end up with hollow pages and your site's traffic crashing to zero.

On the SEO side, AI is far more useful for data mining than for writing copy. It's a fantastic engine for log file analysis, crawl budget optimization, semantic page clustering, and spotting missing terms in Search Console. But if they're just dumping raw output straight onto your pages, that isn't SEO—it's an automated content farm.

We worked with a similar agency for our machinery parts site. They published forty AI articles in the first two months; organic clicks jumped from 150 to 400, but we didn't receive a single quote request. The posts were just vague generic overviews. The conversions only started trickling in once our own engineer revised those drafts and added technical schematics.

Ask the agency these questions: 1) Are they uploading content straight into the CMS, or is a human performing technical copyediting? 2) How do they check for hallucinations and uniqueness? 3) Are they utilizing AI solely for copy, or also for technical site audits and internal linking structures? If their answers are vague, don't sign.

agencies love slapping the ai label on everything to jack up their prices. they run two prompts to get stuff they were too lazy to write manually and sell it as a retainer. in a technical field like packaging any purchasing manager reading that junk will spot it instantly.

Does the quote cover technical SEO like page load speeds, mobile responsiveness, and broken links, or is it strictly content? If you shell out 18,000 TL without fixing the site's technical foundation, search bots might take months just to index those 30 articles anyway.

Before signing any contract demand a verified business case study that they built from scratch using this exact methodology. If they can't show a real business in your vertical rather than a cherry-picked Search Console screenshot don't let them use your site as a guinea pig. Agree to a one-month trial first and avoid long-term commitments.

Can search engines definitively detect whether copy was generated by AI though? btw and if they can does the site get penalized—how does that mechanism actually work?

I have a question, don't want to go off-topic though. If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance.

Hope this helps.

I agree, and I'd like to emphasize that. Mistakes made on the AI-powered SEO side are usually reversible but expensive.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

You're right. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth. Good luck with that.

I'm in the same situation, that's why I'm asking. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back. Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

This is exactly what we experienced. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Good luck with that.

yes that's exactly how it is with AI-powered SEO. the real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time then btw proven by experience.

This approach has a cost, which isn't discussed. People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

There's a part I don't understand. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
