We don't want to delete our Google Maps listing — but the address is wrong, how do we fix it?

Two months ago, we moved our ceramic and bathroom decor shop—which we've operated in central Hamburg for six years—to a larger showroom three kilometers away. Our tax documents, corporate website, and all official records have been updated to the new address.

However, our old address is still showing up on Maps. Customers keep showing up at the old location, finding the doors locked, and complaining. An advertiser we spoke with advised us, "Let's delete the old listing completely and open a fresh profile with the new address, it gets approved much faster that way."

Our profile has over 160 genuine customer reviews accumulated over 5 years and a 4.8 rating. I'm terrified that if we delete it, all those reviews and our local search rankings will be gone for good. What is the proper way to update the address and get verified without deleting the existing listing and losing our reviews?

Short answer: Absolutely do not delete your Business Profile; deleting it permanently wipes out all accumulated customer reviews, photo history, and local SEO authority with no way to recover them. All you need to do is log into your existing Google Business Profile dashboard, update just the address field, and complete the new location verification when prompted.

Follow these steps to complete the address update without losing anything: 1) First, make sure the new address is fully updated on your website's contact page and in your Impressum, which is a legal requirement in Germany. 2) Log into your Google Business Profile dashboard, update your shop's address to the new location and drag the map pin exactly to the building entrance. 3) Once you save the details the profile typically enters 'Verification Required' status. At this stage, Google will usually ask for an uncut video recording showing the new storefront sign, street number, and internal operations, or they'll send a verification code by mail.

The profile might be suspended or remain under review for a few days until verification wraps up; this is completely normal. Once approved, all your old reviews, rating and customer Q&As will carry over seamlessly under your new address.

Forget the marketer's advice immediately, deleting the profile means your reviews are gone forever. Make sure the exterior sign is mounted on the new shop before you change the address in the dashboard. If Google asks for video verification, you'll need to film one continuous take starting from the street number right into the checkout counter so don't get caught off guard.

We moved our warehouse in Berlin last year. We had 85 reviews. Updated the address, and the very next day they asked for video verification. Exactly 4 days after uploading the video, approval came through. Rankings dropped slightly for the first two weeks, but by week three we were right back where we were, and not a single review went missing.

Don't change multiple critical details at once. If you try to update the address, phone number, and business name on the same day, Google's algorithm flags it as a suspected account takeover and suspends the profile right away. Change only the address first, get it verified, and let it settle.

Local search algorithms in Germany place huge weight on consistency. Before updating the address on Maps, update it across phone directories, industry portals, and your social media profiles. Google bots will verify the accuracy of the new address much faster through this consistent data across the web.

tbh put a temporary poster on the old shop's window saying we moved to here and like that way ppl won't be stranded at the door until maps gets approved.

Is the old shop completely empty right now, or has another business moved in? If another business moves there and tries to create its own listing it could cause conflicts on Maps, which is why it's critical that you update the relocation details in the dashboard without delay.

whatever you do, don't delete it! 160 organic reviews are your biggest asset in local business, it takes years to collect that many. all you need to do is edit the address, the system keeps all your reviews intact and your ad agency guy only said that because it's easier for him, definitely do not litsen to him.

You're right, I've been down that road too. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

We need to make a distinction here. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

I have a question. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

we got stuck at the same point for a while. honestly a page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. look at where sales come from.

just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. If it's your first time start small; scaling comes later.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
