Zero-budget keyword research: Which free methods actually provide real data?

We're trying to build the content and category structure for our newly launched industrial packaging and packing materials e-commerce site based in Cologne. Since we're in the early stages, we really don't want to shell out 120-150 EUR a month for professional SEO tools right now. We haven't turned on our ad budget yet either, so the search engines' own ad planners only give us broad, useless ranges like '1K - 10K' instead of actual search volumes.

Our goal for the first 3 months is to produce product and guide content that attracts the right B2B customers to our site. But most of the free methods recommended online are either way too superficial or just pure guesswork.

Is it actually possible to gather reliable, actionable keyword data in the first 3 months without subscribing to any paid tools? Which free sources should we use, and in what order?

Short answer: You definitely don't need paid SEO tools in the first 3 months; the search engine's own interface, Search Console, and competitor pages in your niche will give you the most reliable data for free. While professional tools rely on external algorithms to make educated guesses, user intent data pulled directly from the search engine is far more accurate.

In the early stage, what you need isn't exact search volume numbers, it's search intent. Follow this order to extract it for free: First, use the search engine's autocomplete feature and the 'related searches' section at the bottom of the SERPs. Type your main product into the search box and add letters one by one to list out the variations people are actually searching for. Use the 'People also ask' boxes directly as subheadings for your blog posts and guides.

Second, here's a handy trick to get clearer numbers out of those wide ad planner ranges: Even without launching an active campaign, set up a draft campaign in the ad planner and check the Forecast tool. It will give you much more precise daily or monthly impression projections for that keyword cluster. That narrows the range down without spending a dime.

The third step is to start reading your Search Console data from day one after launch. It's the clearest tool for seeing which queries bring users to your site, where you rank, and which searches generate impressions without clicks. Plotting these three sources into a spreadsheet to nail down 40-50 focus keywords in your first quarter will be more than enough to hit your goals.

When working with a zero budget, you can follow this workflow: 1) Crawl your competitors' titles and meta descriptions to build an industry keyword pool. 2) Check Google Trends for seasonal popularity and relative demand comparisons. 3) Dig through industry forums and Q&A sites to study the exact phrasing customers use. 4) Gather all these keywords into a single spreadsheet and group them by category.

When we launched our first project, we didn't spend a single cent on SEO tools for 6 months. We wrote 30 in-depth guide articles using nothing but related searches and search box suggestions. By the end of the fourth month, we hit 8,000 unique organic visitors a month, and incoming inquiries brought in our first paying clients.

Type your keyword into the search engine and open the source code of the top 5 ranking competitor pages. Note which terms they repeat in their title tags, H1s and subheadings. You'll essentially extract months of their research in 10 minutes for free.

You can find keywords with free methods, but you won't see keyword difficulty. If you target broad, generic terms in a competitive space like B2B packaging, you might end up with zero traffic for the first 3 months. Make sure you focus heavily on 3-4 word long-tail searches.

The tip about getting ad planner forecasts without running a campaign makes a lot of sense. Do those impression estimates actually track close to organic search volumes in Search Console, or do they only reflect ad clicks?

Even when your traffic is still low, pay close attention to impressions in your Search Console Performance tab. If a page gets impressions even while sitting at position 40, the search engine has already matched your site with that query. With on-page title and content tweaks, you can climb to page one pretty fast for that term.

When we opened our first store, we immediately jumped on a popular SEO tool for 140 euros a month. Honestly, for the first 3 months we spent so much time staring at dashboard charts that we barely had time to write content, plus we didn't even know how to interpret half the metrics. We canceled it and got much faster results writing purely around search engine suggestions.

To sum up the thread: Focus on search intent over exact volume numbers early on, lean into autocomplete and related searches, monitor Search Console consistently, and target long-tail queries that signal direct buyer intent rather than generic terms.

My question might sound amateurish, sorry about that. The real issue isn't the number but what it's based on.

Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

You're right, I've been down that road too. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Hope this helps.

Let me speak from the other side; I'm on the supplier side. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand. Hope this helps.

I went through the same thing two years ago. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Let me share my experience. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

When you try to change everything at once nothing settles. Correct me if I'm wrong.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Hope this helps.

to get into the details: Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

if you post the result here, it will help others too.

There's also a measurement aspect to this. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
