Agency sent an SEO audit report that feels completely hollow, what should actually be in a standard audit?

We run an e-commerce site based in London selling local home textiles and handmade ceramics. After our search engine visibility stagnated for the past six months, we hired a local agency and paid 1,400 GBP for a comprehensive SEO audit. When I opened the 45-page report they delivered last week, I was hugely disappointed.

Almost the entire document is made up of colorful charts exported from an automated crawling tool, generic definitions, and cookie-cutter alerts like 'missing H1 tag' or 'images lack alt text.' When I had our developer look at it, he said, 'There isn't a single concrete directive here on what we should fix on the server side or in the codebase, let alone what priority to give it.'

What should a well-structured, professional audit actually cover across technical infrastructure, content, and backlink dimensions? How can we tell what's just marketing fluff versus an actionable, worthwhile plan in the report we were given?

Short answer: A real audit isn't an automated software export; it's a strategic roadmap that translates your site's technical setup, content gaps, and backlink profile into a prioritized action plan. Rather than just listing deficiencies, the report needs to spell out what to fix and in what order based on business impact and required effort, written in language a developer can actually act on.

A comprehensive audit rests on three pillars. First, the technical side: it investigates wasteful URL structures burning crawl budget, root causes of non-indexed pages, server response times, mobile readiness, and messy canonical setups. Second, the content side: it maps out cannibalizing pages competing for the same keywords, thin content failing to meet user search intent, and topical gaps your competitors rank for that you're missing. Third, the link side: it audits broken internal link hierarchies, pages that don't pass equity, and the overall quality of referring domains pointing to your site.

Spotting marketing fluff vs. actual analysis is straightforward. If a report just drops '12 images are missing alt tags' and moves on, that's automated boilerplate. But if it says, 'Faceted navigation parameters in category X are causing bots to crawl 4,000 junk URLs, and robots rules along with parameter handling need to be updated like this to stop it,' you're looking at genuine engineering work. Anything that can't be turned directly into a ticket for your dev holds zero real audit value.

Check the first few pages of the report to see if there's any log analysis. Nobody can know where search bots are actually getting stuck on your site without analyzing server access logs. A technical audit that doesn't show which useless parameters crawlers waste the most time on is half-baked.

Unfortunately, nobody writes a bespoke 45-page architecture strategy from scratch for 1,400 GBP. They most likely plugged your domain into a standard crawler, hit export to PDF slapped their agency logo on it and called it a day. Agencies love peddling these pre-packaged templates.

If you want to get any value out of this report, submit a revision request asking the agency for three specific deliverables: 1) Technical bug tickets your dev can pick up straight away. 2) A list of pages that fail search intent, marked to be either consolidated or pruned. 3) A clear diagram of the internal linking architecture across category pages.

When we had an audit done for a similar e-commerce store last year, the report had 84 items. We sat down and filtered through them; only 6 were genuinely critical redirect chains and broken sitemap issues choking organic traffic. Once we fixed those 6, visibility rebounded within three months, while the remaining 78 items were total visual filler.

id say dont accept canned pdf reports. ask for a call and tell them to walk u through every single item and explain how it directly affects revenue or traffic, most of them will start stumbling over their words real quick.

Did your contract include post-audit implementation support or developer consulting? Because no matter what's written in that report, if the agency isn't sitting down with your team to prioritize tasks, that file is just going to sit forgotten in a folder somewhere.

Book a call with the agency right away and set the report aside. Ask them directly 'What are the top two critical issues my developer needs to tackle in this week's sprint, and what outcome should we expect once fixed?' If they can't answer that you wasted your money.

To get into the details: Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

If I were you Id go this route.

I'd say don't rush. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

there's a common mistake people make when doing this then any comment made witout a control group is just a guess.

I'm curious too. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Processes without records never improve because you don't know what to fix. Good luck with that.

I have an objection here. Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Timely topic. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

That's all sorry if I went on too long.

It's rare to find an explanation this clear.

There are three things to check when doing this. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
