Meeting with a Google Ads specialist, what exactly does this role do and what should I ask?

we run a small-scale e-commerce brand producing ceramic and home decor items. i mean up until now I've tried managing our ads myself using basic search and Smart Shopping campaigns. however, even though we hit a monthly ad spend of 60.000 TL, cart abandonment rates have spiked and we can no longer clearly measure the return on our spend.

next week we're sitting down with a freelance Google Ads specialist. they quoted a flat monthly fee of 14.000 TL for account management. like my main question mark is what this person actually does on a daily and weekly basis but beyond adding a few keywords and tweaking bids I can't really tell what kind of operational value they'll add.

what are the actual duties and responsibilities of someone in this role? what technical and strategic questions should I ask durinng the meeting to see if the candidate really knows their stuff and to make sure theyll manage our budget properly?

Short answer: A Google Ads specialist is a strategist who ensures your advertising budget converts into target sales or qualified leads at minimal cost. They don't just add keywords; they build conversion funnels, configure audience targeting, optimize budget distribution, and use negative match types to cut wasted spend.

In your meeting, the first area to focus on to gauge this specialist's value is technical infrastructure. The most critical duty expected of them is verifying that Google Analytics and conversion tags are firing without errors. If add-to-cart, checkout, and successful purchase events aren't properly tagged, AI bidding strategies will just burn through your budget. Your specialist must be well-versed in server-side tracking and enhanced conversions setups.

The second area is campaign architecture. You should ask the candidate these concrete questions: 1) How will you segment our product catalog in Performance Max campaigns based on profit margins? 2) How often do you audit negative keyword lists? 3) Will you optimize spend toward click volume or return on ad spend (ROAS)?

Also clarify the working model. The ad account must strictly be created under your company's name so that historical data and ownership remain yours. A 14.000 TL flat monthly fee is a reasonable management tier for a 60.000 TL budget, but for that rate you should demand a weekly optimization log and at least one detailed monthly strategy meeting.

On our 70.000 TL budget, after bringing in professional help, our ROAS went from 2.2 to 3.8 by the end of the fourth month. They rebuilt our conversion setups from scratch; this process doesn't yield results in the first week.

Definitely drill into their Merchant Center and product feed optimization experience during the interview. In e-commerce, if product titles, custom labels, and GTIN codes aren't optimized, a significant portion of your budget will bleed into irrelevant search queries.

The market is flooded with specialists who set up automated campaigns and check the dashboard once a month. If you're looking for someone to invoice you a management fee just to forward a colorful PDF report pulled straight from Google once a month, you have endless options push them hard with your questions.

3 dealbreaker questions you should ask in the interview: 1) Will I retain full ownership of the ad account and audience lists? 2) How many times a week will you scrub negative search terms? 3) If we miss our target ROAS, what specific steps will you take to protect the budget?

the number one rule is to never let them create the account under their own agency profile. if you ever part ways down the road, all your historical campaign data and built-up negative keyword lists stay with them and you'll be forcde to start completely from scratch.

Make sure to mandate that they focus on cost per acquisition (CPA) and net revenue contribution, not clicks or website traffic.

Before starting the collaboration, I recommend signing a written consulting agreement that clearly outlines the scope of work, weekly optimization reporting schedules, and data confidentiality obligations.

A 14.000 TL flat fee on a 60.000 TL budget means you're spending nearly a quarter of your total spend on consulting right out of the gate. If you don't set clear performance KPIs for the first three months, that cost will severely squeeze your profit margins.

Thanks for writing this, that's the right way. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Good luck with that.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. Everyone rushing into google ads specialist role gets stuck at the same point.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

There's a part I don't understand. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

There's one point I'm curious about. Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back.

I agree with this. Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Let me share my experience. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

I'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Proven by experience.
