What should I keep in mind when setting up a Google Maps business profile, and how does it affect rankings?

i just opened a 45-square-meter boutique cermaic and handmade gift studio over in Kadıköy Moda. tbh we put up our sign and spent about 160.000 TL on interior renovations and initial inventory. now besides foot traffic, I want people searching for pottery studios or unique gifts nearby to find us directly.

i'm planning to handle the Google Maps business registration myself, but from what I've read online, tons of local business owners get teir profiles suspended or buried off the map because of bad category picks or naming violations but i mean i wasn't sure if I should just use the exact name on our storefront sign or squeeze a few keywords in next to it.

how do address verification primary category selection, and profile completeness impact rankings during the first few weeks? what steps should I take to get off to a solid start without risking a suspension?

Short answer: The most crucial thing during initial setup is to use strictly your official storefront name without adding extra keywords, and to set your primary category to your exact core service. When your address, phone number, and tax registration details match up perfectly, verification goes faster and your profile gains a solid baseline score in local search.

The ranking algorithm looks at three core signals: relevance, distance, and prominence. During initial setup, the biggest driver of relevance is your primary category. For example, as a pottery workshop, pick "Ceramic Studio" or the most specific match rather than a generic "Gift Shop"; you can always add secondary categories for your other activities later.

These days, verification is mostly done via a short video recording or postcard code. When filming the video showing your storefront sign, street number, and interior, make sure there's zero ambiguity. Tacking neighborhood names or product keywords onto your business title might look tempting for quick wins, but the moment it's caught, the listing gets suspended entirely.

As soon as the profile goes live, fill in your operating hours completely and upload 10-15 high-res photos of your space and products. A handful of genuine, photo-backed reviews from real customers visiting the workshop in the first two weeks will quickly broaden your visibility radius on the map.

The biggest mistake I've seen over the years is keyword-stuffing the business name. Whatever is written on your physical sign must match your profile character for character. If you slap things like "ceramics gift kadıköy" onto the end, competing shops will report it with one click and your profile gets suspended. Dealing with the reinstatement appeal will eat up at least a month of your time.

We opened a coffee shop on a similar scale last year. In the first month, all we did was pick the right primary category and upload 12 interior shots. By month two, after getting 18 genuine reviews from real customers, direction requests from map searches jumped from 40 to 210 a month. Photos and reviews really move the needle.

Having a permanent outdoor storefront sign is a must during the verification stage. If Google asks for video verification, you need to show the street sign, the exterior of the shop, and then unlock the door with your key to show the cash register or workbench inside, all in one continuous take. An edited video will get rejected right away.

Congrats on the new shop! The competition around Moda is tough but friendly, though ranking on the map takes some patience. Whatever you do, don't ask friends and family to leave reviews on opening day while connected to your Wi-Fi; the system can flag reviews from the same network as spam and delete them. Have them spread them out over a few days.

Keep these in mind during registration: 1) Drop the map pin right on the building's entrance door. 2) If you don't have a website yet, don't use the free site builder in the profile, and don't add your social media link either—just leave it blank for now. 3) Use a landline or a dedicated business line for the phone number.

Everyone obsesses over review counts, but location accuracy matters way more. If your shop shows up on the next street over and a customer drives around twice and gives up, those negative user signals will drop your ranking in the map algorithm. Getting the pin aligned down to the millimeter at your front door matters even more than reviews.

im about to register a new business too but did they get rid of sending verification codes by mail? like are we going to receive a postcard, or is it just video verification on mobile now?

Postcard verification is super rare these days; the system has almost entirely switched to video verification. Have your tax certificate, lease agreement, or a utility bill in your name handy at the shop; if you show them on the desk for a few seconds in the video, it usually gets approved within 48 hours.

I completely agree. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

Generally correct, but one part is missing. Mistakes made on the google maps business profile setup side are usually reversible but expensive.

Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I went through the same thing two years ago. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

I agree with this. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

You're right, I've been down that road too. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

If I were you, I'd go this route.
