I designed social media ads using AI, how do I measure if they actually drive sales?

We run an e-commerce business in Riyadh selling women's clothing and home textiles. For the past two weeks, I've completely handed over visual production for our social media ads to AI tools. I placed our products on hyper-realistic AI-generated models and virtual settings, putting together 20 different ad variations.

We spent a total ad budget of 4,000 SAR on this campaign. In the dashboard, the ads got great click-through rates, cost per click dropped by about half compared to our traditional photo shoots, and we got 110 orders from the site during this run. But there's a big question mark lingering in my mind: I can't tell how many of these orders actually came from the persuasive power of the AI visuals versus people who were already going to buy via organic search or existing followers spotting the discount.

On top of that, the attribution data in the ad dashboard doesn't match our e-commerce backend order count at all. Is there a practical test setup to clearly isolate and measure the direct impact of AI-based ad creatives on final sales and bottom-line profitability?

Short answer: To measure the true sales impact of AI ads, you need to run a controlled A/B test targeting the exact same audience with identical budgets—running AI visuals on one side and traditional product photos on the other—and track results using UTM parameters alongside server-side conversion tracking.

The biggest pitfall right now is default click and view attribution in ad platforms. Even if a user just sees the ad without clicking, then later visits your site directly and buys, the platform will claim that sale. To prevent this, narrow your attribution window in the ad manager to '1-day click' and turn off view-through attribution completely.

To set up the experiment properly, split your 4,000 SAR budget evenly. Put only your traditional studio or clean packshots into Campaign A, and put your AI model creatives into Campaign B. Use the platform's native split test feature to prevent audience overlap. Ad copy, discount offers, and destination landing pages must be 100% identical.

Add unique UTM tags to the links on each variation. In your e-commerce analytics dashboard, break down revenue per order, net margins, and return rates by these tags. While AI visuals might boost clicks by making the item look different than it actually is, they can also cause high return rates after delivery; your success metric must be net profitability, not cheap clicks.

We ran a similar test last month for local furniture sales in Riyadh. AI visuals had a cost per click of 0.80 SAR, while real photo shoots came in at 1.40 SAR. However, when it came to conversions, real shoots yielded 2.8% while AI visuals stalled at 1.1%. Cheap clicks don't guarantee sales.

Take it step by step: 1) Verify that server-side tracking is active on your site. 2) Create campaign-specific discount codes like AI10 and REGULAR10. 3) Count how many times each code gets used at checkout to completely bypass the dashboard discrepancies.

Create a separate coupon code for each creative right away. The second a customer enters the code from the ad visual on the checkout page, you'll see firsthand which ad is actually making you money. That's the cleanest field test there is.

In textiles, AI visuals can misrepresent fabric texture and color. Gulf customers have very high expectations. An image might look stunning and drive orders, but you'll bleed money when cash-on-delivery packages get rejected at the door. Have you factored in the return rate?

The click surge is completely normal because AI visuals grab attention instantly in the feed so people click out of pure curiosity. But a curiosity click and high purchase intent are completely different things. Without coupon codes or dedicated landing pages it's impossible to see the real impact.

edit: typed from phone, sorry for typos.

never run ads without utm parameters imo. you can just filter orders in google analytics and see exactly how much revenue came from each campaign with one click no need to get confused by ad manager data.

How many of those 110 orders came from first-time buyers? If you're retargeting your existing audience, the AI visual was just a trigger; the real credit goes to the product itself. What was your customer acquisition cost for net-new audiences?

I disagree with you on this point. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

Proven by experience.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Any comment made without a control group is just a guess. Good luck with that.

There is something to watch out for... Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast making it faster changes nothing.

Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate. anyway correct me if Im wrong.

I have an objection here. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

This is my opinion, Im not claiming its absolute truth.

timely topic.. and anyway don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

a page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance. Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

Good luck with that.

Let me speak from the other side; Im on the supplier side. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late. That's all sorry if I went on too long.

i think its hard to be that definitive about social media ads artificial intelligence. hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

this is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.
