I'm designing Instagram ad creatives myself — what should I watch out for, is there a copyright risk?

We worked with an agency last year for our boutique coffee roasting workshop, but despite spending a 15,000 TL budget, the returns fell way below our expectations. That's why I decided to take over the ad management and creative production myself. With a monthly ad budget of 5,000 TL, I aim to boost our packaged coffee sales on Instagram.

I'll be creating the graphics myself using online design tools. But I have some technical doubts. Which dimensions perform better for the feed, stories, and reels? Also, if I use fonts or stock background photos I found online in commercial ads, what are the odds of getting hit with copyright penalties?

And what should I look out for in the visual design so the ads don't get rejected for too much text or certain trigger words? I need a clear roadmap so I don't make mistakes starting from scratch.

Short answer: For a successful Instagram ad creative, don't stick to a single size; build vertical or square assets for the feed, and full vertical for stories and reels. Never use fonts or photos randomly downloaded from the web in commercial ads. Pairing your own clear product photos with a simple direct offer is the safest and most effective route.

Be clear on size standards: For the feed, the 1080x1350 pixel (4:5 vertical) format covers more screen real estate than a square and grabs more attention. For Stories and Reels you must go with 1080x1920 pixels (9:16). Leave about 250 pixels of safe space at the top and bottom of the asset, because profile icons, captions, and call-to-action buttons overlay on those areas.

When it comes to copyright risks the biggest traps are fonts and stock images. A "free" label inside design tools doesn't always grant commercial use rights; make sure the license agreement explicitly allows commercial advertising. Copyrighted music or background images copied from the internet can get your ad account banned and bring legal cease-and-desist notices. The cleanest fix is snapping your own coffee bags on your phone under good lighting.

For ad approval avoid putting fake play buttons checkmarks, or deceptive click elements on the image. Keep text to under one-fifth of the total area; even if text-heavy images do get approved, your reach costs will spike.

Don't waste your time on square graphics. Just produce two formats: 1080x1350 vertical for the feed, and 1080x1920 full screen for stories. Vertical content that fills the screen grabs users' attention much faster and lowers your cost per click.

dumping unnecessary budget on agencies was a waste, so good call taking it over. like in the coffee business, authenticity sells... instead of artificial graphics pumped out of online design templates a sharp short video of you brewing fresh coffee or a well-lit shot of your packaging will sell infinitely better.

Don't take font licensing lightly. I've repeatedly seen business owners hit with massive copyright settlement notices through a notary just because they ran ads with an unlicensed font. Stick strictly to open-licensed font families that explicitly permit commercial use.

We ran an A/B test on our own e-commerce site: we compared a template graphic made in a design tool against a natural shot of the product on a counter taken with a phone. With the natural photo, our cost per click dropped from 4,20 TL to 2,60 TL.

Don't make the mistake of writing a whole novel of promo details right on the image. The platform doesn't outright reject ads for having too much text anymore, but behind the scenes it drives up your costs and throttles your reach. Put the core message in the caption, not on the image.

Your visuals and ad copy must not contain statements that violate the Tüketicinin Korunması Hakkında Kanun and relevant advertising regulations. Health claims, particularly on food products, or misleading claims like "100% natural cure" can lead to administrative fines from the Ticaret Bakanlığı.

In my first ad campaign, I drew a red "Complete Order" button right in the middle of the image. The ad got rejected for "deceptive interface imitation," and my account quality score took a hit until I appealed it. Never add fake buttons inside the image.

A natural photo, a clear offer, a commercially licensed font, and zero fake buttons; the formula for getting approved and seeing success really is that simple.

i've been dealing with this for a long time. tbh everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

To get into the details: Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

We've heard this a lot, but it never happened like that for us. Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

I have a question, don't want to go off-topic though. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

Following. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.
