I'm going to design ad creatives myself — does the choice of software make a difference?

We are a small 5-person business in Izmir producing boutique olive oil and local soaps, selling them through our own website. We can allocate around 20,000 TL per month for social media ads. An ad agency we consulted quoted us a monthly creative fee of 14,000 TL just to design campaign images and videos. Spending almost two-thirds of our budget solely on design isn't sustainable for us, so I decided to prepare the visuals myself.

However, I don't have professional desktop design software on my computer, nor do I know how to use it. Should I use browser-based template design sites, or is it essential to learn graphic design software even at a basic level?

Does changing the software used to create the visual directly affect ad performance? Also, what do I need to keep in mind regarding square or vertical formats, text density, and copyright on stock photos found online?

Short answer: What determines success in ad creatives isn't how professional your software is; it's delivering a clear message, catching the target audience's eye, and following technical ad specs. While your budget is tight, instead of wasting time learning complex desktop graphic programs, you can produce high-converting visuals in minutes using browser-based template tools.

Your choice of software has no direct impact on ad results because ad algorithms don't care what app exported the file; they look at user clicks and purchases. Browser-based tools speed things up immensely since they provide ready-made canvases matching the current aspect ratios of social media platforms.

Sizing-wise, focus on two core formats: a 1:1 square format for feed posts, and a 9:16 vertical format for stories or vertical placements. Avoid crowding images with too much promo copy; presenting the main message and the product itself clearly while leaving details to the ad copy lowers your ad costs.

Copyright is the most critical risk area. Using product or model photos downloaded randomly from search engines can lead to cease-and-desist letters and hefty compensation demands. Simple product shots taken with your phone in good daylight are far safer than stock photos, and because they feel authentic, they build much higher trust in e-commerce.

When I first started out, I grabbed an olive branch photo online to make the ad look professional. Three months later, a settlement demand and a massive copyright invoice came from a photo agency, and I had to pay it. Ever since, I only design using photos we take in our own grove—zero risk of penalties and sells way better.

Mind your file formats when exporting. Use PNG for vectors or text-heavy graphics, and high-quality JPG for product photos to prevent bloated file sizes. Heavy files load slowly on mobile, causing users to bounce.

browser template sites are more than enough dont waste money on complex software. anyway just tweak the colors to match your brand instead of leaving the template as-is and youe good.

Three rules directly affect your costs when prepping ad creatives: 1) Don't slap huge promo text across the middle of the image; put the product front and center. 2) Always create separate assets for 9:16 stories and 1:1 feeds. 3) Keep price or discount highlights small, tucked in a corner badge.

people want to see authenticity in products like olive oil and soap and instead of an over-polished artificial look from desktop software a crisp phone shot of a bottle on a workshop table in daylight will do wonders even inside a basic template frame.

Agencies charge 14,000 TL not just to design visuals but to test which creatives actually generate clicks. If you're doing it yourself, don't rely on a single visual; create at least three variations with different colors and angles, and test on small budgets to see what works.

Don't be intimidated at all. Even the free tiers of browser-based tools are more than adequate to get started. Upload your own product photos, pick a clean font, and launch the campaign. Over time you'll see for yourself which designs actually convert.

I felt relieved reading this answer, so it's not just me. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Thanks for writing this, that's the right way. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule. If I were you, I'd go this route.

I have a question, don't want to go off-topic though. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

let me share what happened to me; it might be useful and solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Let's separate the concepts, they're getting mixed up. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

To get into the details: People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

If you post the result here it will help others too.

There's a trap here, let me mention it. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Let me share my experience. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.
