I want a free online product catalog — is it good enough for SEO, or should I invest in a real store from the start?

I run a small workshop in Alicante making handmade leather bags and wallets. Up until now, we've only sold through wholesalers and local trade fairs. Now I want to showcase my products online, both to sell wholesale to boutique shops across Spain and to reach end consumers. My budget is pretty tight right now; dropping 1,500-2,000 EUR on a custom e-commerce site or dedicated store platform would really stretch me thin.

I've come across free platforms where you upload photos and they generate a digital brochure or catalog page. You just upload the products they give you a link, and the page goes live. My primary goal, though is to steadily bring in organic traffic from Google searches.

Can pages hosted on these free catalog platforms actually rank in search engines for keywords like "wholesale custom leather bags"? Or would I be completely wasting my time SEO-wise meaning I should just build a proper website on my own domain from day one, even if it's basic?

Short answer: Free catalog platforms are only good for sending direct links to existing clients; their chances of driving organic search traffic from an SEO perspective are practically zero. If your goal is to consistently capture potential leads from Google searches, you need a lightweight catalog setup running on your own domain from day one.

The biggest drawback of free services is that they serve pages in formats that search engines can't crawl or properly index. Most digital catalog tools present your products inside interactive PDF-like viewers or dynamic iframes that search bots can't parse. You can't define individual URLs, title tags, product schema markup, or unique meta descriptions for each item. As a result, Google never recognizes them as standalone product pages.

The second critical risk is digital asset ownership. Any effort you put into a catalog hosted on another company's subdomain builds their domain authority, not yours. If that platform ever switches to a paid model, changes its terms, or shuts down, you lose all your indexed rankings and acquired backlinks overnight.

The solution doesn't require spending 2,000 EUR. You can buy your own domain and set up an open-source CMS on a hosting plan that costs 60-80 EUR a year. Run it in catalog mode without integrating a checkout or payment gateway—just product photos and a "Request Wholesale Quote" button. That way, every bag model gets indexed by Google on its own dedicated URL, and every bit of SEO work you do compounds on your own asset.

Search engines rely heavily on structured data (schema markup). Your product's price range, availability, and image URLs must be explicitly defined in the source code. Most free catalog sites render content as a single visual canvas or behind heavy JavaScript. Because search bots can't parse the content as clean text, it won't get indexed.

We made the exact same mistake two years ago. We uploaded our 60-piece ceramics collection to a free digital catalog platform. Over six months, we didn't get a single organic impression in Search Console. Once we moved everything over to our own domain with dedicated product pages, we were hitting 350 organic unique visitors a week by month three.

You really don't need to hire a developer. Just get a domain for 12 EUR a year, hosting for 5 EUR a month, and set up an open-source blogging platform. Pick a free portfolio theme and add your products page by page. Throw in a contact form and you're good. It won't take any more time than you'd spend messing with a free catalog platform.

Is your wholesale target only Spain, or are you also considering exporting to countries like France and Germany? If you need a multilingual setup, managing that on free platforms is impossible; on your own site, you can add language options with a single click.

You sell handmade leather goods, brand perception is everything. If you send a boutique owner a link to some free platform, youll look amateur. Even just sending a proposal from a corporate email on your own domain doubles your chances of making a sale.

Edit: asked below, I wrote the answer in the second message.

Even if you launch your own site, ranking on page one for "wholesale leather bags" isn't a two-week job. It will require serious content and local link-building work behind it. Don't expect orders to just pour in just because you built the site; you need to keep attending trade shows and doing cold email outreach.

putting content on someone elses platform is like painting the walls of a rental with expensive italian paint... if the landlord kicks you out tomorrow youre screwed... get your own domain and save yourself the headache.

Correction: I misremembered the figure, it was a bit lower.

The matter is actually quite clear: Free tools basically serve as digital brochures you can send to a client on WhatsApp. Attracting new customers through search engines, however, is a long-term SEO investment, and it cannot succeed without a domain you actually own.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

Saved. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Mistakes made on the free online product catalog side are usually reversible but expensive.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Any comment made without a control group is just a guess. Hope this helps.

this is exactly what we experienced. honestly any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

of course, it varies if your sitution is different.

I've been down this road, let me tell you. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

This is exactly what we experienced. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

I disagree with you on this point. Processes without records never improve because you don't know what to fix.

Good luck with that.
