How long does SEO actually take — when should I expect the first results?

we registered a fresh domain and launched a website 4 months ago for our Cologne-based B2B industrial cleaning equipment business. two months ago, we signed an SEO contract with a local agency for 1,200 EUR per month. the agency handled some technical fixes, prepared content templates and gave us keyword lists.

however even after 60 days, organic traffic from Google is basically sitting at zero but like we rank first if you search our exact company name, but we aren't even in the top 10 pages for our actual target industry product keywords. our consultant at the agency keeps telling us it's very early in the process and that we need to be patient.

what I want to know is, is this kind of flatline normal for a brand new website? tbh how long does SEO really take and what intermediate indicators should we track during this waiting phase to know our investment isn't going to waste?

Short answer: For a brand-new domain with zero history, two months is far too early to expect organic revenue or top rankings for core keywords; noticeable traffic movement usually starts around month four, while solid gains take anywhere from six to twelve months depending on competition. Seeing zero traffic at two months doesn't automatically mean the agency is failing, but a total absence of movement shouldn't be completely ignored either.

To gauge progress during these first few months, focus on leading indicators rather than pure keyword rankings. Here is what you need to track: 1) Technical indexation status; whether newly published pages are actually being crawled and indexed by search engines is the baseline requirement. 2) Impressions; even without clicks, your site should be starting to gain visibility in search results. 3) Coverage errors; check whether 404 pages, duplicate content, or mobile usability issues have been resolved. 4) Position movement; see if you are starting to see small upward shifts for low-volume, long-tail queries, even if they are still on back pages.

Instead of just being told to be patient every month, ask your agency for a transparent progress report showing your Search Console impression growth graph, crawled pages report, and indexing status for newly published content. If impressions are trending upward, the technical foundation is taking hold; if impressions are dead zero, you need to question whether there are technical roadblocks.

Search engines take time to trust fresh domains. In a competitive space like B2B and industrial equipment, expecting a traffic spike within 60 days just isn't realistic. It's completely normal for the agency to spend the first two months building out the technical baseline and content structure. That said, by month three you should start seeing the impression curve bend upward in Search Console; if it doesn't, that's when you reevaluate the strategy.

We also started with a fresh domain in the B2B packaging space here in Düsseldorf. For the first 90 days, we were getting maybe 2 or 3 organic clicks a day. By the fourth month, we hit 40-50 clicks a week, and our first serious order inquiry came in at the end of month six. Getting zero clicks in two months is totally normal; the real turning point happens around the 120-150 day mark.

Two months might be early, but agencies using the waiting period as an excuse is also super common. Zero clicks can be normal, but zero impressions is definitely not. Log into Search Console yourself—if the impression graph hasn't budged at all, your pages might not even be indexed. Don't blindly trust the agency, go check the console data with your own eyes.

Technically, the first thing you should check is how search engine bots actually see your site. There might be an accidental disallow rule left in your robots.txt file, or a forgotten noindex tag in the meta tags. Also make sure server response times are solid and the sitemap is submitted properly. If there are no technical snags like that, the rest is just domain authority building up over time.

In your next meeting with the agency, I recommend clarifying the following points: 1) How many of the published pages have been indexed? 2) Are there any pages ranking in the top 100 for the targeted long-tail keywords? 3) What does the technical and content roadmap look like for the next 60 days? If they can't answer these questions with concrete data, you've got a problem.

absolutely nothing moved on our site for the first two months either i was so bummed out but the agency kept telling us to wait, turns out search engines basically test new domains out first. by the end of the third month impressions started trickling in for smaller keywords, don't panic but definitely keep an eye on search console weekly imo.

I completely understand that it stings to pay 1,200 EUR a month and see flatline zeros on the screen. But in B2B, clients don't just call up or fill out forms right away; decision-making cycles are long. Be patient for now, be clear with your agency, but don't burn bridges just yet. Focus on impressions until the fourth month.

Expecting results within two months on a fresh domain is like planting a seed and expecting fruit the next day; judging the agency before giving it at least four months wouldn't be fair.

Quick summary for newcomers: When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

I have no experience with how long does seo take, so I'm asking. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isn't your page, but the search result appearance. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

To get into the details: Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

I agree with this. Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses.

I completely agree. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.
