Google Maps listing shows wrong opening hours — who on our end can fix this?

We run a bakery and coffee shop in Frankfurt. For the past few weeks, our Google Maps profile has been showing us as open on Sundays and public holidays even though we're closed. Customers come all the way to the door, find it locked, and then leave bad 1-star reviews on our Maps profile.

This business listing was set up about four years ago by a college student working for us, but they left a long time ago and we have no idea which email address they used to manage it. We urgently need to fix our business profile's opening hours and completely remove any access previous employees have. As the business owners, what's the fastest way for us to resolve this?

Short answer: As long as primary ownership of your current Maps listing remains with the former employee, you won't be able to fix the hours permanently; any external edits will be put on hold or rejected by the authorized account. The quickest route is to go to the existing profile using the shop's official Google account and request a formal transfer of ownership via the 'Claim this business' option.

First, search for your business on Google Maps and click the 'Claim this business' or 'Own this business?' link on the profile details. The system will display a masked version of the current owner's email address (like a***@gmail.com). At this point, select 'Request access', pick 'Ownership' as the access level, fill out the form confirming you are the business owner, and submit it.

This request will be automatically forwarded to the former employee's registered email, giving them a 3-day window to respond. If the ex-employee approves, control transfers directly to you. If they don't respond at all within 3 days a 'Verify' or 'Claim ownership' button will activate on your Google dashboard. You can then claim ownership unilaterally by requesting a verification code by mail or verifying the business via phone or video.

Once you take over ownership head to 'Users' under Business Profile Settings. Completely remove the permissions of the former employee and any other accounts you don't recognize. Next, update and save your regular schedule under 'Hours', and specifically add Germany's public holidays (Feiertage) under 'Special hours'. That way your profile will automatically show as closed on holidays.

The ownership transfer can take 3 days; in the meantime search for your shop on Maps just like a regular user and report Sundays as 'Closed' using the 'Suggest an edit' button. Sometimes a community edit gets approved temporarily within hours which can stop the bleeding right away.

Once you gain access, don't tie your business profile to a single personal email address. Set up an admin email on your company domain and make that the primary owner. That way, even if staff changes in the future, your company keeps ownership.

we went through the exact same hassle last year, our former waiter had set up the account. we sent an access request, and luckily the guy was cool about it and clicked the email link the next day to transfer it over... if you still have the former employee's phone number just call them and ask them to click the confirmation email so you don't have to wait 3 days.

note: I wrote this based on my own experience, it might not apply to everyone.

During the claim process, Google might ask for proof of ownership such as a business license or utility bill. Having your bakery's Gewerbeanmeldung and a recent electricity bill issued in the business's name ready to go will speed things up.

Waiting for a code by mail can sometimes take up to two weeks and the envelope might not even reach the bakery. If the video verification option appears after submitting the access request, upload a one-take video showing the shop sign, the counter, and you unlocking the door with your key; it usually gets reviewed within 24 hours.

we changed our sign and wrote the opening hours on the window but maps kept sending people over with the old hours. like unfortunately they don't remove 1-star reviews caused by wrong hours on maps either so sort it out asap.

3 urgent things to do right after regaining control: 1) Delete the former employee from the user list. 2) Mark public holidays as closed under 'Special hours'. 3) Leave a professional reply to the recent 1-star reviews saying, 'The incorrect hours in our system have been resolved, we apologize for the inconvenience.'

what happens if the former employee is acting in bad faith and hits 'Deny' when we send the access request? tbh do we lose the listing completely?

We need to make a distinction here. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right. If I were you, I'd go this route.

I completely agree. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

I was thinking the same thing. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

Hope this helps.

thanks for writing this, that's the right way and tbh processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

if you have questions, wrie them; Ill answer as best I can.

Following... The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.

The most overlooked point about edit google maps listing is this: Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.
