Instagram: I've been paying for a month but don't get the auction — what am I actually buying?

I run a small workshop in Barcelona making handmade leather wallets and bags. I've been trying to promote my products on Instagram for about a month using boosted posts and the ad manager. I've spent a total of 450 euros over the course of the month, but I still can't figure out what I'm actually paying for or how this system works behind the scenes.

Sometimes a single click costs 0.20 euros, and other times it spikes to 1.10 euros for the exact same audience. The dashboard shows terms like CPM, reach, and amount spent, but I just can't wrap my head around the logic. Am I not just directly renting ad space, why does the price keep jumping around?

What exactly determines the outcome of the bidding and auction system? How can I stop burning through money with a small budget when I'm targeting the same audience as big brands?

Short answer: With Instagram ads, you aren't renting fixed ad space; you're buying moments of user attention and the right to serve an impression on their screen. The system determines which ad appears in a user's feed through a split-second auction, and the final price depends not just on your bid, but also on the quality of your content and real-time competition for that audience.

The CPM (cost per mille / cost per thousand impressions) in your dashboard is the baseline currency of this auction. When the algorithm runs the competition for each user, it uses this formula: Total Value = Bid Amount x Estimated Action Rate + User Quality Score. So, even if a massive fashion brand bids high for an impression, if users dwell longer on your handmade leather wallet video and engage with it, the system can serve your ad at a lower cost.

That's why your cost per click (CPC) swings between 0.20 and 1.10 euros. On weekends, when everyone is running conversion-focused sales campaigns, competition ramps up and CPMs climb. Also, as your creative fatigues or your audience gets bored of the product, your quality score drops, forcing the algorithm to charge you more to show the ad to the same person.

To protect your budget: 1) stop using the boost post button and set up targeting inside Ads Manager, 2) avoid running multiple ad sets to the same audience simultaneously so you don't bid against yourself, and 3) test at least two different image or short video variations every week to prevent creative fatigue.

The underlying math revolves around eCPM. Even if you're optimizing for clicks or conversions, the system translates your bid into a per-thousand-impressions value on the back end. If your click-through rate drops from 1% to 0.2%, the algorithm has to charge you five times as much per click just to protect its target impression revenue.

Here's how the process works step by step: 1) A user in Barcelona swipes through their feed. 2) In that exact millisecond every business trying to reach that user enters an auction. 3) The algorithm calculates how interested the user is in leather goods. 4) The ad with the highest total score hits the screen, and the spend shows up on your dashboard.

For our clients running e-commerce sales in Catalonia, average CPMs fluctuate between 4 euro and 14 euro depending on the season. During the holidays, CPMs skyrocket when massive chains pour money into ads. If you want decent returns on a 450 euro budget, set up retargeting for site visitors instead of continuously blasting a broad audience.

The boost post button in the Instagram app is the fastest way for small businesses to burn through their budget. You can't exclude detailed audiences or separate placements there. The system just burns your cash by serving impressions to the cheapest, most irrelevant users. Real control over the auction happens inside the professional ads manager.

The cheapest way to tilt the auction in your favor is quality content. Post a 10-second workshop clip showing a wallet being stitched. When people watch it all the way through, the algorithm treats it as valuable content and immediately drops your cost per click. Make ads that don't look like ads.

It's totally normal to feel confused after spending 450 euro in your first month we've all been there. You're not renting fixed ad space like in a newspaper; in digital hundreds of thousands of sellers are competing for users' attention all at once. Don't panic things will click once you dial in the right audience.

edit: I wrote something wrong above, sorry about that.

What campaign objective did you pick? Traffic, profile visits or direct catalog sales and conversions? The system shifts the auction pool based on your optimization goal; profile visit audiences are always cheap, while purchasing audiences cost significantly more.

To sum it up: on Instagram, you aren't buying ad space, you're bidding for a user's attention in that split second. Just throwing more budget at it won't keep your costs from spiking; you need compelling creatives and precise targeting dialed in through the professional dashboard.

I'll argue the opposite, don't get mad. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

I'm in the same situation, that's why I'm asking. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

I completely agree. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Here's how it went for us. like the real issue isn't the number but what it's based on.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

We need to take it step by step. The real issue isn't the number but what it's based on.

Hope this helps.

i feel the same way. tbh mistakes made on the how instagram ads work side are usually reversible but expensive.

updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.. and anyway proven by experience.

I was thinking the same thing. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.
