Setting up a Google Business Profile: registered but no calls coming in — what are we missing?

We set up a Google Business Profile for our independent body shop and auto repair garage in Spandau, Berlin about 3 months ago. We requested a postcard for address verification, the code arrived within two weeks, and we entered it into the system and verified it successfully.

During setup, we filled in the business name, address, landline number, and standard opening hours. But even after more than 70 days, we're getting practically zero phone calls or direction requests from our profile. Unless you type our exact business name into Google Maps, we don't show up on the map at all, even from right next door.

I look at competitors around us, and shops at a similar distance show up in the top three when you search auto repair or brake service. What exactly are we missing or doing wrong in our profile setup? What steps should we follow to rank higher in local search?

Short answer: Just having a verified profile is not enough on its own to rank in local searches; the Maps algorithm evaluates relevance, distance, and prominence together. Without proper primary category selection, detailed services on your profile, consistent local directory listings, and a steady stream of real customer reviews, you won't rank high on Maps.

The most critical point people overlook is usually the category structure. Most businesses pick a generic category and leave it at that. Set your primary category to the most-searched term that reflects your core business (e.g., auto repair and maintenance shop), and add other specific specialties (brake service, auto body shop, etc.) as secondary categories. The category is the algorithm's first filter for deciding when to show you.

After that, make sure to complete these steps: 1) Define every service you offer individually under the Services tab with short descriptions, 2) Upload at least 15-20 high-res photos showing the storefront, signage, shop interior, and work in progress, 3) Ensure your business name, address, and phone number on your website match your profile character for character, 4) Naturally incorporate Spandau and surrounding neighborhood names along with your core services in the business description.

Finally, you won't rank without building trust signals. Ask every customer you serve to leave a review on your business profile, preferably with photos. Responding to reviews regularly and professionally as the business owner also directly helps with the ranking algorithm.

Whatever you do, don't stuff keywords into your business name; profiles get suspended really fast in Germany over that. Your name should match your storefront sign exactly. The fastest way to close the gap with competitors is collecting your first 10-15 real customer reviews. A profile with no reviews rarely gets recommended on Maps.

NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency is a critical local ranking factor. Is your company listed with the exact same details across German Yellow Pages, local chamber of commerce directories, and industry portals? If the rest of the web can't confirm your address, the algorithm won't trust the profile's authority and will keep you buried.

Nobody could find us when we first opened either. We started handing customers a little card with a QR code when giving them the invoice asking if they were happy to take a minute to leave a review on Maps. Once we gathered 25 reviews over two months, calls started coming in even from outside Spandau. Asking in person works wonders.

Photos and categories definitely matter, but a three-month-old business won't beat someone who's been on the same corner for ten years right away. The search engine also looks at a business's history and click volume in local results. Expecting to fill out the profile and rank #1 tomorrow morning isn't realistic, it takes time.

do you keep your hours updated on public holidays? if you don't confirm on your profile whether you're open or closed on holidays in germany, the algorithm assumes the business is inactive and can tank your visibility prettty hard.

Speaking from experience: when we only had 3 photos and 2 reviews, our profile was getting around 150 views a month. Once we uploaded the shop sign, cars on the lift, and our certificates, and brought the review count up to 18, our monthly calls and direction requests shot past 600 by the end of the fourth month.

Were about to open a new shop too, and I heard theyre asking for video verification instead of postcards. Is address verification easier by postcard, or is everyone forced to verify via video now?

Check your service area settings; if you haven't selected surrounding neighborhoods one by one, the system might be keeping your coverage radius unnecessarily narrow.

I agree with this. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Everyone rushing into set up google business profile gets stuck at the same point. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Don't miss this: A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

I have a question, don't want to go off-topic though. Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late.

Good call starting this thread. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

The discussion got scattered, let me summarize. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses. Hope this helps.

Correct in theory, but it doesn't work that way in practice. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

This thread is archived. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Good luck with that.

This is exactly what we experienced. If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later.
