We verified our Google Business Profile but it's completely blank, is there a complete optimization checklist?

We are a three-year-old family-owned plumbing and heating repair business based in New Jersey with six technicians. Two weeks ago we finally got our Google Business Profile live after completing the video verification process. I mean right now, though, our profile only has our company name, phone number, and primary category; everything else is completely blank.

We have an approximate local marketing budget of 800 dollars a month but before hiring an agency we want to fully set up and optimize the profile ourselves. Ranking high in the map pack across neighboring townships is critical for our lead flow.

What are the absolute must-fill fields for Google Business Profile optimization? What concrete steps directly impact map rankings, and what are the most common mistakes that could trigger a profile suspension?

Short answer: When optimizing your Google Business Profile, the priority is not hitting a 100% completion score on paper; it is selecting the primary category that precisely reflects your core revenue driver matching your business name exactly to your registered signage, and defining your service area zip codes accurately. Once that baseline is set, uploading weekly real job photos and collecting keyword-rich organic reviews from paying customers will dictate your local map pack ranking.

First and foremost, be extremely careful with the business name guidelines. Tacking city names or keywords onto your official name (like adding "Plumbing Repair") is the single most common cause of suspensions; use your exact legal trade name. Next assign your primary category to your most profitable core offering (such as Plumber), and use secondary categories for adjacent work like Heating Contractor.

The second phase is your services and description section. In the Services tab, itemize every job you take on (drain clearing, boiler installation, pipe repiping) and add brief descriptions. In the 750-character business description explain your specialties and target service areas using natural language without keyword stuffing.

The third phase is ongoing optimization. Have your techs snap photos of service vans tools on site and completed installations and upload them at least twice a week. Never use stock photos. After finishing each job, text the customer a direct review link via SMS, and respond professionally to every single review, weaving in the specific service performed.

Here's the checklist you need to sit down and work through today: 1) Fill in your business hours and emergency service availability completely. 2) Add every single district and zip code you cover to the service areas section. 3) In the appointment link field, drop the direct link to the quote or contact form on your website. 4) Turn on in-profile messaging and route the notifications to an authorized phone.

We run a garage door repair business in New Jersey too. When our profile first launched, we were getting 4-5 calls a month. Once we hit 40 real customer reviews and started uploading 3 authentic job photos a week, direct calls jumped to 35-40 a month. Save that $800 agency budget for a review generation system or local ads instead.

Don't leave the 'Q&A' section on your profile empty. Use personal accounts outside your own to post the 4-5 questions you hear most often (like how quickly you can show up for an emergency leak), then write detailed helpful answers from your business account. Prospective customers check there first when they're browsing your profile.

Don't fall for agencies guaranteeing top map rankings in two weeks. They usually just spam keyword-stuffed reviews from fake profiles or pack spam into your business name. The second the algorithm catches on that profile you jumped through hoops to video-verify gets suspended overnight.

edit: I wrote something wrong above, sorry about that.

In our early excitement, we tacked the names of two districts we serve onto the end of our business name. Two days later, our profile was suspended out of nowhere. Fixing it and getting it reinstated by Google support took a solid three and a half weeks of sending utility bills, tax certificates, and photos of our storefront signage. The call volume we lost during that downtime was brutal.

The local algorithm weighs three main factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is driven by your primary category selection and service list. Distance is simply where the searcher is located. Prominence comes from your website's local authority, consistent NAP (name-address-phone) citations across directories, and a steady flow of high-quality reviews.

Congrats just clearing video verification is a huge win—theyre giving people a really hard time with that lately. Make it a routine for your field techs to ask customers when wrapping up: "If youre happy with the work would you mind taking a minute to drop us a rating on Google?" Those reviews are what give you the biggest boost.

have the techs take pics while they're out in the field. real job photos like the logo on the van toolboxes pipe replacements get ten times more clicks and build way more trust than generic agency stock guaranteed.

I feel the same way. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree, and I'd like to emphasize that. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

Proven by experience.

Timely topic. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

My perspective changed after experiencing that. Everyone rushing into google business profile optimization gets stuck at the same point.

A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics. This is my opinion I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

You're right. The real issue isn't the number, but what it's based on.

Good luck with that.
