They're selling us GEO and AEO completely separately from SEO, are these actually two different services?

We're a 12-person company in Valencia manufacturing industrial packaging materials. We do B2B sales across Spain and have been running SEO with a local agency for about two years at 850 EUR a month. When contract renewal time came up this month, the agency pitched us a new proposal.

They told us search engines are evolving into AI-driven direct-answer engines, and that traditional SEO is no longer enough. In the quote, they tacked on GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) alongside SEO as two separate line items, bumping the monthly retainer to 1,900 EUR. Their reasoning is that AI models and direct-answer search snippets require entirely different optimization and content strategies.

Are GEO and AEO genuinely separate disciplines detached from standard SEO that justify their own billing? Or are we just looking at solid technical SEO and semantic content architecture repackaged under shiny new buzzwords?

Short answer: No. GEO and AEO are not standalone services detached from standard SEO that justify doubling your invoice. These concepts are simply natural extensions of modern semantic SEO and solid technical infrastructure.

What agencies call AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is just optimizing to show up in search engine answer boxes or voice searches. That doesn't come from some magic trick; it comes from properly structured data (JSON-LD schema), clear Q&A formatting, and spotless on-page hierarchy. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), on the other hand, is about getting generative AI engines to cite and synthesize your content as a source. What you need for that is authoritative source citations, strong brand signals, and topical depth.

Here is how I'd handle the contract: 1) Ask the agency to break down technically what they plan to do differently for AI optimization; schema markup and clear information architecture already fall under standard SEO. 2) Ask how they intend to report on these two new line items, because tracking clicks and citations from most generative AI engines lacks concrete metrics compared to traditional dashboards. 3) Instead of eating a massive 1,050 EUR increase, demand that semantic content updates and schema improvements be rolled into the existing retainer.

In short, these aren't separate channels replacing SEO or operating in a vacuum; they're modern components that any quality search engine work should already include.

The agency world loves repackaging the same core fundamentals with new acronyms every three or four years to pad their retainers. If you don't have a solid technical foundation, fast load times, and content that actually answers user intent, neither GEO nor AEO will save you. Look at whether they were actually doing the job properly under your current contract first.

I'm really curious what they're actually going to report on while asking for an extra grand in euros a month. When there isn't even a standard analytics tool that clearly measures which page AI chatbots cite and when, what on earth are they going to bill you for every month?

We run a tech repair service in Madrid. Last year, we added clear Q&A schemas to all our service pages and turned the definitions into clear, single-paragraph sentences. With zero extra agency costs, we started showing up directly in answer boxes. There is absolutely no justification here to double the bill.

The technical side is really just all about entities and semantic data context. When you properly set up Organization, Product, and FAQPage structured data and clarify conceptual relationships in your copy, both search engines and AI models can easily parse your site. These are sub-items of technical SEO, not a whole separate universe.

classic agency tactic tbh. contract renewal time comes around, they throw out new buzzwords and inflate the price. there's literally nothing concrete they'll put extra hours into, they'll just make the same copywriter add two extra headings and call it a day.

What specific deliverables did they commit to for GEO and AEO in the proposal? For instance, did they list concrete items like X number of schema tests per month or entity verification across specific platforms, or is it just vaguely called general optimization?

Before going into the meeting, clarify these three points: 1) What concrete KPI will they use to measure visibility in AI engines? 2) What will they produce that's actually different from the content creation already covered under your current 850 EUR scope? 3) Was knowledge graph optimization already part of the existing contract?

Definitely do not accept the offer at that price. Tell them, "We view SEO as a single whole; if you can adapt the AI-friendly content structure within our existing SEO scope and cap the budget at 1.000 EUR max, we'll continue," and wait for them to back down.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. Any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from. If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Absolutely. If I were to add anything: If you don't write this down from the start it leads to arguments later.

Proven by experience.

I agree and I'd like to emphasize that. A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content.

I think differently. Ranking is the result, search intent is the input. Look at intent first.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

i'd say don't rush and i mean if you don't write this down from the start it leads to arguments later.

a page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics. honestly of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

There's also a measurement aspect to this. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

Good luck with that.
