Free Google SEO Guide: Where Do I Start in Month One on Zero Budget?

We are a two-person team running a custom renovation and hardwood flooring business based in Lyon. We went official last month and set up a basic website. After startup costs, tools, and vehicle insurance our cash reserves are pretty much gone; we don't have a single cent to spend on SEO agencies or paid keyword tools charging 100 euros a month.

Right now our site gets maybe 15-20 visitors a month at best, and that's just acquaintances we handed business cards to. We want to get organic traffic from search engines but the SEO articles I read online are so abstract and convoluted that I don't even know where to begin... Some say write blog posts constantly others talk about technical code optimization.

What actionable steps can I take in the next 30 days without spending a single euro where I can actually track the results? How should I prioritize things for the first month?

Short answer: With zero budget, your main focus for the first 30 days should be your free business profile on search engines and homepage content tailored specifically to the local area you serve. You don't need paid tools to pull in your first organic traffic; search auto-suggestions and the free webmaster console will get the job done.

Step one: Set up and verify your map and local business listing. Clearly define your service area as Lyon and the surrounding districts. Upload crisp clear photos of your flooring and renovation projects. From the jobs you wrap up in month one get at least 5 real clients to leave detailed reviews mentioning phrases like 'hardwood flooring' or 'living room renovation'. For local services the bulk of your search traffic in the first 6 months comes from this profile.

Step two: Connect your site to the free webmaster console and submit your sitemap. Monitor page indexing here at no cost. Request manual indexing for any pages that haven't been indexed yet. This console shows you exactly which search queries you're getting impressions for, without paying a penny.

Step three: Type 'hardwood flooring Lyon' into the search bar followed by a space; note down the autocomplete suggestions that pop up and the 'related searches' section at the bottom of the results page. Use those terms to craft your homepage title, meta description and a clean write-up listing your services.

Step four: Create dedicated landing pages for your core service areas (e.g., laminate flooring solid wood sanding and varnishing bathroom renovations). On each page write a straightforward 300-400 word breakdown covering how you do the job, estimated turnaround times, and the types of materials you use.

note: I wrote this based on my own experience, it might not apply to everyone.

Don't waste your time blogging; nobody looking for a flooring guy in Lyon wants to read general interior design articles. Focus on your map listing and your homepage title tag. Set your title tag directly to 'Hardwood Flooring & Renovation in Lyon' and you'll see a difference within two weeks.

Here's your 30-day checklist: 1) Fill out your map profile 100%, 2) Submit your sitemap to the free search console, 3) Test page load speeds with a free audit tool and compress oversized images, 4) Collect five three-sentence reviews from past clients.

We started with zero budget in Strasbourg last year. Literally all we did was clean up our business profile and add neighborhood names to our page titles. We had 18 searches the first month, and by month three we were getting 45 phone calls a month solely through the map listing. Didn't spend a single cent on ads.

Don't buy into agency marketing claiming you can't do SEO without paid tools. Those platforms just scrape and repackage Google's own search results anyway. Search bar auto-suggestions and the free web console give small local businesses more than enough data to work with.

For local businesses, NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency is the foundation of search engine optimization. Ensuring your contact details on your website match your map listing down to the comma is a critical verification signal for indexing algorithms.

watch out for the phone pics u upload to the site. I mean drop a 5mb pic straight onto the page and it'll take 10 seconds to load nobody waits for that. run them through a free image compressor first imo.

edit: typed from phone, sorry for typos.

when you finish up a job and sit down for a coffee with the homeowner ask them right then and there. tbh text them the map link and have them leave a rating on the spot.. but trust me, it gets the phone ringing ten times faster than writing hundreds of blog pages ever will.

Do we need direct access to our source code to add the search console to our site? Or can we just verify it by adding a single DNS record through our domain registrar panel?

i've been dealing with this for a long time.. but don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

that's all, sorry if I went on too long.

Let me summarize what's been said so far. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This thread is archived. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

My question might sound amateurish sorry about that. like the answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Just a heads-up. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

I feel the same way. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

If you post the result here, it will help others too.

Three different views emerged, they all complement each other. Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later, as both sides remember it differently.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. The harder it is to reverse a decision, the slower you should make it.

Just leaving this note it might be useful.
