Paused our Google ads but organic traffic dropped too — what should we have done instead of killing the campaign?

We've been running Google ads consistently for about two years on our e-commerce store where we sell industrial kitchen equipment. Recently to balance company cash flow we abruptly zeroed out our 60,000 TL monthly Search and Shopping budget and paused all campaigns... Our goal was to halt ad spend entirely until our budget recovered and rely solely on visitors coming from organic search.

But literally the day after we paused the campaigns, we checked the analytics dashboard and noticed our organic search traffic had dropped by almost a third. Looking at our keyword rankings there's no noticeable decline in our organic positions; yet organic sessions and incoming orders stopped completely in their tracks.

Does pausing Google ads directly harm organic visibility, or is there another mechanism here were missing? Instead of shutting ads off cold turkey what kind of phased optimization approach should we have taken?

Short answer: Pausing your ads does not trigger an algorithmic penalty on your organic rankings from Google. The drop you're seeing comes from losing the traffic generated by ad-driven brand awareness—users who originally saw your ads and later returned via organic search—along with losing the double-listing presence on the SERP.

While Search ads are active, users first discover your product via paid links but rarely buy on the spot. Prospects who compare prices or deliberate on the purchase usually search for your exact company name on return visits and land through organic results. When you zero out ads all at once, you cut off the inflow of fresh users; within days, direct traffic and branded organic search volume collapse. On top of that, organic click-through rates decline because the strong trust signal created by appearing in both the ad slots and page one organic results disappears.

Instead of turning off campaigns overnight, you should have executed a phased downscaling plan: 1) First, pause broad non-converting keywords and trim the budget by thirty percent, 2) Keep high-intent exact match product keywords and your brand campaign active on a lean budget 3) Gradually scale back ad spend in two-week intervals while tracking branded search volume in Search Console. That way you would have protected cash flow while getting a true picture of baseline organic demand.

The claim that Google penalizes organic ranks when you cut ad spend is pure myth. If your rankings didn't drop, the algorithm didn't touch you. When ads were running, you occupied two spots on page one; with the ad gone, users simply shifted to your competitors' ads, simple as that.

Last year we suddenly slashed our monthly budget of 45.000 TL to zero in a similar way. Our organic sessions dropped from around 22,000 to 14,500. Looking into the search terms, we clearly saw that generic product searches held steady, but organic searches containing our brand name dropped by more than fifty percent.

Go into the Search Console dashboard and compare the last three months under the performance tab. Add your brand name as a filter in the queries section. If impressions and clicks on non-branded generic keywords remained stable while only your branded searches dropped, it means you haven't suffered any technical SEO loss whatsoever.

What you need to do right now isn't immediately restoring the full budget. Just launch a search campaign protecting strictly your own brand name with a nominal budget of 60-70 TL per day. That way you can quickly test if organic traffic bounces back.

we got mad at the agency too when we first turned off ads thinking organic was dead then turned out even if people don't click the ad they still remember it, then look it up on google and come in organically later. turn off the ads and that initial touchpoint is just gone.

The playbook to follow during a budget crunch instead of shutting down ads completely: 1) Pause broad match keywords that eat up most of the spend, 2) Keep remarketing audiences active so you don't lose past visitors, 3) Use ad scheduling to run ads strictly during business hours, 4) Drop bids to the absolute minimum on keywords where you're already ranking number one organically.

If we just pause the campaigns instead of deleting them do we lose the ad account's historical quality scores and learning data? When we allocate budget again and turn them back on in a month or two, will the system start everything from scratch?

edit: fixed a few typos.

Marketing channels don't exist as isolated islands. Paid ads feed organic traffic, and organic traffic feeds email or direct conversions. When budget pressure hits, narrowing spend down to the most profitable core audience rather than shutting the system down entirely is what keeps the business afloat.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

There's one point I'm curious about. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

I agree, and I'd like to emphasize that. Mistakes made on the pausing google ads side are usually reversible but expensive.

I've been down this road, let me tell you. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

If I were you, I'd go this route.

My questions are cleared up, thanks. A page that answers one question works better than one touching on five topics.

Everyone rushing into pausing google ads gets stuck at the same point. Proven by experience.

There's also a measurement aspect to this. Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

Any unwritten clause becomes a point of disagreement later as both sides remember it differently. That's all, sorry if I went on too long.
