Will using a free QR code menu for my restaurant hurt our local SEO efforts?

I run a 40-table Mediterranean restaurant in Lille. Our printed menus from the pandemic are completely worn out, and constant price updates are costing us 200-300 euros every month in printing expenses. While searching online, I came across platforms offering free QR code menu services; my plan is to stick the QR codes on the tables and display the menu straight from there.

However, I have an SEO concern on my mind. Most of our dine-in customers find us through Google Maps or food searches on search engines. The QR links generated by these free platforms usually point to a third-party domain hosting a PDF or an image.

How will this affect our local rankings, our Google Business Profile, and the indexing of our website? By trying to spend zero, will I end up losing customers or dropping in search rankings?

Short answer: A free QR code menu won't trigger a direct ranking penalty, but it severely undermines your website's local SEO potential. When your menu sits on an external platform or exists purely as an image that search engines can't read, you forfeit your most valuable keywords.

For local search engine optimization, Google pulls the dish names your restaurant serves directly from crawlable text on your website and the menu tab on your Google Business Profile. Most free services publish menus on an external subdomain as an image or a hard-to-crawl PDF. This creates two major drawbacks:

First, when a nearby user searches for a specific dish on Maps, Google can't verify that you serve it, pushing you further down the listings. Second, the hundreds of daily menu visits by customers seated at your tables drive traffic to the middleman platform's domain instead of boosting your own website's traffic metrics.

The best approach is to build a clean, mobile-friendly HTML menu page directly on your restaurant's website, then convert that URL into a free static QR code. That way, you eliminate printing costs while ensuring all customer foot-traffic visits funnel straight into boosting your own domain's authority.

The real catch with free QR services is security rather than SEO. Most free platforms will start redirecting the link after a few months to insert ads or demand customer emails before loading the menu. A hungry customer hit with ads at their table will leave a negative review in a heartbeat.

Here's the difference from a search engine perspective: an image-based menu is just an image file, so Google can't index the text inside. An HTML menu is plain text; dish descriptions allergen details, and prices are directly indexed and matched with local search queries.

If your site runs on WordPress, just add the menu as a standard page. Then use your browser or any static code generator to create a QR code pointing to your own URL and print it for the tables. You won't rely on third-party services at all.

Last year we pulled our menu off a third-party link and hosted it on a mobile-friendly page on our own site. Within three months, discovery views from food searches on our Google Maps profile nearly doubled. Keeping everything on your own domain makes a massive difference.

Does your current website load quickly on mobile devices? If you redirect them to your site, page load speed needs to be strictly under 2 seconds; customers with patchy mobile reception in the dining room won't wait around for the menu to load.

For a proper digital menu setup: 1) The menu must be hosted on your own domain, 2) It should be crawlable text, not images, 3) The exact same link must be added to the Menu field in your Google Business Profile, 4) Prices should be structured using schema markup.

This approach has a cost, which isn't discussed. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task. Hope this helps.

Absolutely. If I were to add anything: Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

If I understood correctly, you're saying: Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses. If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

Let me share what happened to me; it might be useful. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I agree with this. Everything goes well for the first three months; problems arise in the fourth.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

You're right, I've been down that road too. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.

I went through the same thing two years ago. People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.
