I got a digital business card — how does it rank on Google, and do I actually need one?

I run a foreign trade and customs consultancy based in Saint Petersburg. Last month I subscribed to an NFC and QR-code digital business card service for 6,500 RUB a year. I added my phone number Telegram and WhatsApp links, and job title to my profile. Its super handy to tap phones and share info at trade shows.

But last week a prospect told me "I searched your company name on Google and couldn't find your card," which left me confused. honestly does a digital business card page require specific setup to get indexed by search engines? Can it replace a standalone website on its own?

I currently have a 90,000 RUB quote from a local agency to build a multilingual corporate site. Would skipping that spend and relying entirely on the digital business card be enough for search engine visibility and lead generation?

Short answer: A digital business card is not a substitute for a website; it's a direct networking tool built to hand off contact details quickly to people you meet in person, not to capture organic search traffic for your services. It might show up on Google if someone searches your exact name or company, but ranking for generic industry keywords is practically impossible.

A digital card is typically a single-page profile with minimal text, often hosted on a third-party subdomain. For Google to rank a page for competitive searches like "customs broker" or "logistics services," it needs in-depth content, proper technical SEO, an XML sitemap, and organic backlinks. Digital business card platforms simply don't offer that kind of technical flexibility.

Must-haves on your card profile: full name, company name, direct phone and messenger links, office location, a downloadable vCard (.vcf) button, and a link to your corporate website if you have one.

So don't look at that 90,000 RUB website quote as wasted money. If you want clients finding you through search engines, a proper website is mandatory. Treat the digital card as a complementary tool for saving your number into the phone of someone you just shook hands with at an expo.

If you want the card page to show up on Google, connect your own custom domain. Most providers support custom domains. Pointing it to something like 'card.yourcompany.ru' will at least boost the odds of it appearing when people search your exact company name.

Check your provider's page source code. A lot of turnkey card platforms insert a `noindex` tag into the source code to block search crawlers entirely. Even if it gets indexed, search engines won't recognize you as an established business without Schema.org Person or LocalBusiness structured data.

Relying on a digital card for SEO just to dodge a 90,000 RUB spend isn't realistic. An importer looking for customs consulting in Saint Petersburg isn't typing an individual's name into Google; they're searching for specific services. A single-page card has zero chance of ranking for those queries.

Over the past year, I had about 140 people scan my digital business card across three trade shows. Around 60 of them actually saved my contact. But the number of people who clicked that link directly from a Google search is zero. They serve two completely different purposes.

There are three essential details you shouldn't skip when setting up a digital business card: 1) A vCard link that lets people save your contact with one click. 2) Direct chat buttons for active Telegram and WhatsApp for regional communication. 3) Your officially registered office address and tax ID number.

I got a similar business card too but NFC sometimes doesn't pick up on older phones. I mean does the QR code work smoothly on every phone, and would putting the card's link directly in our email signature help with SEO?

in the customs and logistics industry credibility is worth more than money. having someone scan your card at a meeting looks very slick, but before handing over a shipment worth millions, a corporate client will check your website for licenses certifications and references. if your budget allows, definitely get a website built.

In short: A digital business card is a fantastic and practical tool for one-on-one networking, but it generates zero SEO value. For organic search traffic, Google visibility, and landing new clients, an independent website is essential.

This is exactly what we experienced. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people. Look at where sales come from.

Taking notes for two weeks yields better results than a six-month estimate.

I partly agree, partly disagree. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

I'm in the same situation that's why I'm asking. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say. This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

Here's how it went for us. When making a decision, first look at what data you have on hand.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

I'd appreciate it if you shared the outcome. Speed is a threshold issue; if you're already fast, making it faster changes nothing.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. anyway any comment made without a control group is just a guess.

Let me clarify the technical side. Start with a small trial; don't commit to everything at once.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
