i filled out my tax return wrong, felt like i got shot when the penalty came

i founded the company in 2019, i filled out the first tax return myself. didn't check with an accountant, found out later i made a 3% calculation error in a simple period. the file came out, i didn't correct it because i thought it was a 'small thing'.

in 2021 a tax inspector came. i didn't even understand the 'oh' inside me. from that 3% error, a 500% penalty came. the penalty amount was 8,000 lira. i was really shaken by the money then. i hired a lawyer to try to get administrative relief, reduced it by half but still ended up paying 4,000 lira.

lesson: there is no such thing as a 'small error' in taxes. i should have hired an accountant from the start. even if an inspector comes, i'll hire a tax consultant, i'll make corrections. i don't take any tax risks anymore.

bro i experienced this too. i made a mistake on my first tax return, then an inspector showed up it cost a lot. now i tell the accountant 'you handle it', i just sign. taxes are very complex, you need an expert.

my advice to you: if it's like this now apply to the Ministry of Finance, file a 'corrective return'. the penalty might reduce a bit. but file it before the inspector catches you.

Tax errors often lead to heavy fines. Rule: if you can't handle it yourself hire an accountant. If the accountant has insurance they'll cover any mistakes. Don't dismiss tax matters as 'minor'—they can always blow up. The most frequent issue with our clients is tax.

For tax issues: 1- Hire an accountant (immediately), 2- Do an annual review with a financial advisor, 3- Have past declarations checked, 4- Make a strategic plan with a tax consultant, 5- If a fine comes, file an administrative objection with a lawyer. Whichever of these five steps you skipped, fix it.

I'm curious: where did that 3% error come from? Did you declare below your sales volume, or was there a mistake in fixed costs? Because 'error management' depends on the context.

Bro, you got off easy! After getting fined you're doing things knowingly now. Learning this lesson by paying for it is what most entrepreneurs go through in their first years... like you're doing it right now.

edit: typed from phone, sorry for typos.

tax inspector: 'Hi Im the states cleaner, I find dirty money, I write fines'—thats basically what happened to you... anyway dont keep the 'cleaner' around not even as a saying.

Legal process for tax issues: administrative objection (30 days), then tax court, then Administrative Court. If they said yours was partially reduced, that's usually the max it goes. If you file an amended return, new errors bring new fines (if accepted as 'amended'). Hire an accountant.

Finding a tax consultant is easy but there are also types like 'no accountant, just a scammer'. Ask for references, get recommendations from other entrepreneurs. It's worth it if the cost isn't too high, but be prepared.

Quick summary for newcomers: When making a decision first look at what data you have on hand.

Dont hesitate to ask; those who dont ask always pay more. I mean good luck with that.

I can't fully agree with this. The reason for failure isn't one big mistake, but the accumulation of small decisions.

When the closure decision was made is as decisive as the decision itself. Hope this helps.

we need to make a distinction here. mistaking revenue for cash is the most expensive illusion; trust the bank account.

processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix then i mean good luck with that.

Let me summarize whats been said so far... Cutting your own salary is a temporary tactic; if it lasts more than six months, something will break.

The longer you delay cutting the team the more people it affects. anyway proven by experience.

I have no experience with got hit with a tax penalty, so I'm asking. Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix.

Absolutely. If I were to add anything: People defend habits, not processes. Resistance comes from there.

This approach has a cost which isn't discussed. tbh mistakes made on the got hit with a tax penalty side are usually reversible but expensive.

When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles. This is my opinion Im not claiming its absolute truth.
