I want to add a blog post 'SEO tips' article as a summary at the top of the category too — it's almost the same text. Will Google penalize this as duplicate content?
Also, while researching a company, my competitor copy-pastes 'Wikipedia articles' and publishes them on their page. These sites rank very well — so if duplicate content doesn't get penalized, can I do it too?
Short answer: Duplicate content isn't a penalty but it lowers rankings. Google doesn't give a penalty, but by failing to decide which one is original, it indexes both at a low level.
Wikipedia copy-paste: copying original content is a copyright violation + ranking risk. Google's indexing system gives Wikipedia high authority in determining 'who is original', so the competitor's site stays low in rankings. Linking to Wikipedia is good, but copying increases penalties.
Solution: 1) Use canonical tags (same post on different URLs). 2) Cross-link (if a post is short, add a 'read full version' link). 3) Write original content, differentiate from competitors.
Duplicate content types: 1) Internal (within your site) — use canonical tags. 2) External (from competitor sites) — don't copy, write original. 3) Syndication (published on other sites too) — put canonical on the original URL.
Your written page + summary page: you can canonicalize but it's not ideal. Instead, blog post > full, put a 'read more' link on the category page.
we accidentally published a post in two categories noticed the duplicate immediately added canonical and honestly we didn't get penalized but rankings dropped — Google was slow to decide which one to prioritize.
if I syndicate from my written site elsewhere, I put canonical on the original URL but this way, even if other sites link and send us traffic, the ranking credit stays with us.

But newspapers write the same news differently, isn't that duplicate? Or recipe sites write very similar recipes — isn't that duplicate too?
duplicate content isnt a penalty but google basically picks the best one to index. if your page is better written, it ranks higher. dont copyleft write original.
Duplicate content: copying = no penalty but reputation loss. Google: 'this post is in two places, which one do I index?' It gets confused shows both in the middle.
Just a heads-up. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's right.
When we decide without measuring, we always end up in the same place. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.
