I have followers on social media but no sales, what am I doing wrong?

Hi! I design handmade jewelry, I have a nice follower base on social media, my posts get good engagement and really lovely comments!

But no sales. I mean, not zero, but very few compared to my follower count. Lots of likes, few buyers.

Anyway, here's what I want to ask: how do I turn followers into customers? I'm missing something but can't figure out what.

We had the same issue, and the reason turned out to be surprisingly simple: the purchase path was too long.

Try this. Grab your phone, log into your own account, act like a follower, and try to buy a product. How many steps does it take to get to the cart? Where do you get stuck?

With most handmade products, it goes like this: no price in the post, one link in the bio, that link goes to the homepage, and you have to find the product there. Four steps. People drop off at every step.

To-do list: put the price in every post, link directly to the product page, shorten the checkout process.

Also: likes aren't buying intent. People like pretty things, they buy what they need. To sell, you need to explain "what is this for, who is it a gift for, when do you wear it" — just showing it's pretty isn't enough.

i'm a social media manager and this topic excites me so much because everyone gets stuck in the same place!

i noticed: the content that gets the most likes is never the same as the content that drives the most sales. liked content is aesthetic, sales-driving content is informative.

the format that works for me is showing the making process. nobody watches the finished product, everyone watches how it's made! for handmade items this is gold, because you show the effort and then the price doesn't seem expensive.

also, well, i won't go on: follower count is a very misleading number. i've seen accounts with 2k followers selling more than accounts with 20k.

let me say something from a branding perspective, because the answer to this question is rarely technical.

for handmade products, what people pay for isn't the object, it's the story. they can find a similar-looking piece mass-produced for much cheaper and they know it. the reason they buy from you is who you are.

the problem is most designers are afraid to tell this, it feels like bragging. but it's not about praise: it's about why you do this work, where you source materials, how many hours a piece takes.

this also solves price objections. someone who says "expensive" is someone who doesn't see the labor. show the labor and the objection decreases.

don't rush this. building a brand takes months, but once it's built, price debates end.

i have a ceramics workshop and i totally get this, i went through the same thing!

what worked for me was starting to show flaws. broken pieces, kiln fails, experiments. i first thought "who wants to see this" but those posts got the most engagement.

then i realized people don't want to see perfect products, they want to see real humans. and when they buy, they know they're buying from that person.

Melis Hanım, you should try it too, you have nothing to lose!

wow, thank you all so much, honestly everything makes total sense and i wasn't doing any of it!

for example, i wasn't posting prices, i'd say "dm me", turns out i was scaring people off. i started posting prices today.

i'll also film making videos, i'm already working in the workshop all the time, i don't get why it didn't occur to me.

I have an objection here. The answer varies greatly by industry; there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

Yes, that's exactly how it is with social media. Updating an existing page yields faster results than creating a new one.

Don't hesitate to ask; those who don't ask always pay more.

I have an objection here. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

You're right. Hasty decisions become decisions you have to fix six months later.

Processes without records never improve, because you don't know what to fix. I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

We experienced almost the exact same thing last year. Don't trust anyone who gives guarantees; there are no guarantees in this business.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right. When you try to change everything at once, nothing settles.

If you have questions, write them; I'll answer as best I can.

Exactly, and not many people know this. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

I've been dealing with this for a long time. When making decisions, write down the worst-case scenario too, not just the best.

Just leaving this note, it might be useful.

I'm a small business, let me explain from my side. Discussing numbers without verifying the measurement setup is a waste of time.

Let me share my experience. Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

If you don't write this down from the start, it leads to arguments later. btw proven by experience.

I'd say don't rush. Merge instead of deleting; deleted content doesn't come back.

Solutions that work at a small scale collapse when you grow; I learned this late. Proven by experience.
