I uploaded a sitemap but Google shows 'errors' — what do sitemap errors mean, how to fix them?

sitemap purposes: 1) tell Google 'crawl these pages'. 2) provide page metadata (last modified date, priority, changefreq). 3) if it's an image, video, or news sitemap, provide info on that content type.

it works without Search Console too but gets crawled faster with it. so sitemap = tells robots to start, Search Console = notifies Google.

our sitemap is auto-generated by a WordPress plugin (Yoast), never had any issues but if i write manual XML there's a risk of errors... better to find a plugin — it crates and updates sitemaps automatically, fewer errors.

competitors' sitemaps with 1000+ URLs: they're probably big sites (e-commerce etc). tbh for us a 500 URL sitemap is enough scale the code as we grow.

open the sitemap xml in notepad and check if <?xml version='1.0'?> is at the start if URLs are inside <loc>, and if <urlset> is closed. btw if there's an error there, fix it.

sitemap: youre telling Google 'I have 50 pages crawl them all'... goolge says 'ok' but sometimes complains 'couldnt find this sitemap at this URL' but i mean check the URL tell the server admin.

open the sitemap URL in browser and check if the XML shows up. if it doesn't, the 'could not fetch' error is normal. if you blocked it in robots.txt, remove the block and resubmit.

My perspective changed after experiencing that... If rankings stay the same but clicks drop, the issue isnt your page but the search result appearance.

A competitor's ranking might come from years of accumulation, not just their content. Correct me if I'm wrong.
