How much does site speed affect Google rankings, does a 3-second site cause a rank drop?

We've focused on theme and content so far at our company but never looked at site speed. I was shocked when I opened Lighthouse last week and saw a score of 48. Apparently, the homepage loads in 4.8 seconds. I immediately told the tech guys, but they said 'let's prioritize other things' because 'speed doesn't affect rankings that much.'

But I read that Google made Core Web Vitals a ranking factor in 2021. So why is speed treated as if it's not that critical? If I get my site down to 1 second, will I jump two spots, or gain 10% traffic?

Is it worth spending money on an image optimization tool, or is changing the theme more effective? I checked if competitors are fast or slow at first, but I don't know.

Core Web Vitals is a ranking factor now but not a 'primary' one — it's just one among many factors. So yes, it's important, but content, backlinks, and author authority weigh heavier.

Bottom line: If your site is 2 seconds faster than competitors, that creates a +1-2 rank difference. But if your site is 1 second, competitor is 3 seconds, and their content is better, the competitor will still be on top.

Practical side: Going from 48 to 80 (mobile) is worth it. Do this. Don't change the theme immediately for this; compress images, limit plugins. You need to improve speed as much as you improve content. Start with Image Optimizer (paid) or Imagify (cheap plugin).

we had the same problem... there were 15 plugins on the site, which was absurd we deleted them all and kept only the necessary ones... honestly speed dropped to 2.1 seconds. there wasnt a significant increase in traffic but conversion rate increased by 3%. thats something too.

Correction: I misremembered the figure, it was a bit lower.

Site speed has a dual effect: 1) Ranking, 2) User experience. Little effect on ranking but big effect on user experience. People leave without waiting 4.8 seconds on your site, bounce rate gets high. Site speed is important for that too.

Specifically for Core Web Vitals, there are three things: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP - when the main content of the page appears), First Input Delay (FID - responsiveness), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS - does it look jumpy when the page shifts).

In your case, LCP is probably bad — meaning the main image of the page loads late. Reduce image sizes, use a CDN, enable lazy loading.

We had the same thing on our site. We improved speed and there was no difference in traffic but the change we felt ourselves — things working much better customers saying 'the site looks better'. We saw +3 ranks after 3-4 months in ranking but we didn't improve speed for that reason, we improved content... But a fast site = polished content performing better. Quality increases, basically.

For 4.8s LCP, check these: 1) What is the Server Response Time (TTFB) in seconds? Is hosting low quality? 2) What is the first image loaded on the page? What is its size? 3) What is the loading order of CSS/JS files? Inline critical CSS, defer JS. 4) Do you have a CDN? If not, set up Cloudflare for free. These can be done by your tech guy, it's not expensive.

site speed: According to Google it affects ranking but by 2%. compared to content: even if you make my site 0.5 seconds traffic won't come. or if a competitor is at 5 seconds but the article is very good, they rank. so check speed then focus on content.

Keep Core Web Vitals above 80, then focus on content growth. Speed is theater, content is the game.

I have a question, don't want to go off-topic though. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

Here's how it went for us. A page with low traffic might be reaching the right people... Look at where sales come from.

Map listings bring more business than blog posts for most local businesses. anyway hope this helps.

Let me clarify the technical side. The harder it is to reverse a decision the slower you should make it.

Everyone rushing into site speed seo impact gets stuck at the same point. Of course, it varies if your situation is different.

There's a common mistake people make when doing this. If you get three different answers on a topic, the question was asked wrong.

Of course it varies if your situation is different.

To get into the details: Most time waste accumulates in tasks waiting for approval.

Internal linking is the cheapest and most neglected task.

I think it's hard to be that definitive about site speed seo impact. If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.

Hope this helps.
