I told the agency 'unlimited revisions', but after 15 revisions they're asking for 'extra fee' — is this fair?

I had my website design done by an agency. The contract said 'unlimited revision rights'. The manager and architect pushed for 15 revisions saying 'let's change this a bit'. Then the agency said: 'we counted unlimited as design phase only, now it's dev phase, extra fee needed'. I feel like I got scammed.

Terms like 'revision rights' in contracts are very confusing. 'Unlimited' vs. '3 revisions + fee after' vs. 'limited revision scope'. What is the standard? Where is the fairness?

How should revisions be defined? Is a color change a revision, or a structural change? Layout changes? Should customer expectations or agency expectations count?

When drafting contracts: write 'Design phase: 5 free revisions 500k/revision after'. Dev phase: separate pricing. Make a clear cutover.

Looking at it as a process, the picture changes. Trying to do this alone is the most expensive way.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

this approach has a cost which isnt discussed. btw if you dont write this down from the start it leads to arguments later.

code without setup documentation isnt yours even if you have it.

You're right. Implementing a change request process doesn't slow things down it speeds them up.

I'm also curious if anyone does it differently.

yes, that's exactly how it is with revision rights. processes without records never improve because you don't know what to fix.

The cheap-looking path usually ends up costing more later. honestly processes without records never improve because you don't know what to fix.

Payment schedules should be tied to project phases, not calendar dates.

I feel the same way. Access credentials should be opened in the company's name, not personal accounts.

If scope grows, either time or budget must grow. There is no third option. Good luck with that.

My questions are cleared up, thanks. Weekly written progress reports are much more useful than asking for dates.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. The biggest time-waster for us was not knowing who had the final say.

That's all, sorry if I went on too long.

I disagree with you on this point. Ask who prepared the quote and who will actually do the work.

This is my opinion, I'm not claiming it's absolute truth.

I can't fully agree with this. The harder it is to reverse a decision the slower you should make it.

Good luck with that.

We got stuck at the same point for a while. Everyone rushing into revision rights gets stuck at the same point.

If it's your first time, start small; scaling comes later.
